A lot of people ask me about all of the clutch hits I had in 2004, but let me
tell you: It was a lot more than me. In baseball, it takes a lot of people to
win a game. It’s like I said before. You have to pitch, you have to hit, you
have to play defense. If you don’t do any one of those things right, you can
lose the game. We had a lot of people do a lot of things right when we
started to play better against the Yankees. It wasn’t just me.
I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.
In Game 4, by the time my homer landed in the Yankees’ bullpen, we had a
6-4 win and everybody was going crazy. My teammates all came running out of
the dugout and we celebrated at home plate, and I threw my helmet in the air
just before I stepped on the plate. But we still had a lot of work to do. The
Yankees still led the series, three games to one, but Game 4 gave us some of
our confidence back. We got some momentum. A lot of reporters wanted to talk
to me after the game, and I remember telling them not to give up on us, not
to think that it was over yet.
“Things can change,” I said. “You never know what can happen from now
on. We played a really good game tonight. It was a totally different game
than the one we played (in Game 3, when we lost 19-8).”
In some ways, Game 5 was a lot like Game 4. On two straight nights,
against the Yankees in the American League Championship Series, I had two
walkoff hits. My phone was ringing off the hook. The chances of anybody
getting two walkoff hits like that, in about 24 hours, are probably about the
same as a team coming back to win four straight after losing the first three
games of a seven-game series.
By now, I’m sure you know that we went to New York and won the last two
games to eliminate the Yankees and win the series, coming all the way back
after losing the first three games. In Game 6, Mark Bellhorn hit a big
three-run homer against Jon Lieber, who shut us down in Game 2, and (Curt)
Schilling came back to pitch on a bad ankle and shut down the Yankees. On the
next night, in Game 7, I hit a two-run homer in the first and we scored four
more runs in the second. The Yankees never really had a chance. We won the
game, 10-3, and nobody was asking questions about whether we could come back
and beat the Yankees anymore.
(Curt)
For me, after the walkoff hits in Games 4 and 5, things were just
starting to change, but I really didn’t have time to notice yet. I got named
the American League Championship Series MVP after hitting for a .387 average
with three home runs and 11 RBIs in the series, but I was still focused on
other things. As happy as everybody was, we still had work to do.
We were going to the World Series.
