BOSTON -- Both the Red Sox and Orioles saw their benches clear during a
Friday night game at Fenway Park, ending in a short brawl between David Ortiz
and Baltimore closer Kevin Gregg.
Gregg threw three straight pitches inside to Ortiz, who started walking
toward the mound, yelling while pointing at Gregg. The benches and bullpens
emptied to the field and both sides were warned, though play resumed.
Gregg then got Ortiz to fly out to center field, and as Ortiz started running
to first base, Gregg yelled something and was immediately ejected by
home-plate umpire Mike Estabrook. Ortiz then charged Gregg, who took a full
swing, barely missing the designated hitter's head. The two scrapped briefly
before both benches and bullpens emptied on to the field again, holding the
two players back while play was paused.
Ortiz and Boston catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who was in the bullpen, and
Orioles reliever Jim Johnson were also ejected.
