BOSTON -- As expected, the Red Sox placed lefty Jon Lester on the 15-day
disabled list with a strained latissimus muscle suffered on Tuesday. He'll be
eligible to be activated on July 21, meaning he'll miss the first turn and a
half of the starting rotation after the All-Star break.
Lester underwent an MRI on Wednesday afternoon, and Red Sox team doctor Tom
Gill said in a statement that the MRI confirmed the original diagnosis.
Lester will be shut down from throwing at least until after the All-Star
break and will begin a "progressive strengthening program" once his symptoms
subside.
The lefty has thrown 114 1/3 innings in 18 starts this season, tops on the
staff. Despite uneven results, his 3.31 ERA is right in line with the 3.33
ERA he'd compiled in 64 starts over the last two seasons -- both Cy Young
Award-caliber seasons.
"We were actually planning on possibly skipping him on Sunday, anyway, and
having him come out of the (All-Star break) last just because of the load he
will carry," Francona said. "This kind of makes this a no-brainer."
Atchison has made seven appearances in two different stints with the Red Sox
this season, compiling a 4.73 ERA while striking out nine and walking two. He
has a 1.95 ERA in 19 appearances with Triple-A Pawtucket, striking out 43 and
walking four in 37 innings pitched.
