Journeyman Grzegorz Panfil stunned Milos Raonic on Sunday to put Poland on
the verge of reaching the final of the mixed teams Hopman Cup.

and open a 3-0 lead in the second, only for Bouchard to rally and force the

Bouchard saved two match points before levelling the match.

She saved another in the final set, before Radwanska finally prevailed with a
stunning cross-court forehand winner, sealing her 6-3, 6-7 (9/7), 6-2 victory.

Earlier in the day, world No 6 Petra Kvitova powered into the new season with
a comprehensive win over Anabel Medina Garrigues as the Czech Republic
completed a clean sweep of Spain.

Kvitova was far too good for Medina Garrigues, who won the tournament with
Fernando Verdasco earlier this year but battled knee soreness against the
2011 Wimbledon champion in their singles clash.

The Czech star simply had too much power for the veteran Spaniard, ranked
100th, and dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 rout that took less than an
hour.

Kvitova's boyfriend, Radek Stepanek, then secured the Group B tie for the
Czechs with an easy 6-2, 6-2 win over little-known Spaniard Daniel Munoz-De
La Nava.

It has been an indifferent couple of years for Kvitova following the
breakthrough success at Wimbledon that enabled her to finish 2011 ranked
second in the world behind Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki.

Kvitova, 23, was pleased with her form, saying she had worked hard on
improving her fitness heading into the new year.

"My off-season preparation was very hard," she said.

"I can improve everything (fitness-wise).

"I can be faster, quicker, stronger, fitter."

Kvitova said she was focused on improving her efforts in the Grand Slams next
year, after failing to advance beyond the quarterfinals in 2013.

Grzegorz Panfil overcame a rankings gap of 277 places to shock Milos Raonic
and hand Poland a surprise victory over Canada on the second day of the
Hopman Cup in Perth.

Agnieszka Radwanska had got the Poles off to a hard-fought 1-0 lead with a
6-3 6-7 (9/7) 6-2 triumph over Eugenie Bouchard.

Panfil, a late replacement in the tournament for the Poles for the injured
Jerzy Janowicz, backed that up by defeating the world number 11 7-6 (7/1) 6-3
to earn victory in the tie.

The Canadians at least claimed a consolation victory in the doubles, winning
6-3 5-7 10-3.

Panfil told the tournament's official website: "I'm really surprised, it was
my best match in my career so I'm really happy and back into Australia after
six years.

"I'm really happy to be here, I still can't believe it.

"I was so, so focused on every point. I was serving really good, much better
than yesterday ... I was trying to play like always my best tennis. The
serve's were pretty good and my forehand as well."

Earlier on Sunday, the Czech Republic had made a perfect start against Spain
in Western Australia with world number six Petra Kvitova and veteran Radek
Stepanek easing to their respective victories before they combined for a
mixed doubles triumph.

Kvitova needed just 57 minutes to beat Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-1 6-0 while
Stepanek beat world number 194 Daniel Munoz-De La Nava 6-2 6-2.

The result gave the Czech Republic an unassailable 2-0 lead over Spain ahead
of the mixed doubles rubber which Kvitova and Stepanek won 6-3 6-4.

On the back of an easy win over Flavia Pennetta on Saturday, Radwanska's
testing encounter was the perfect preparation ahead of the Australian Open.

'I think so, yes of course, I think every match is a great practice between
playing points and playing a real match," said the world number five.

"[It] is a great warm-up before Sydney and Melbourne. So I'm very happy I
could play another good match and I'm ready for the next one."

PERTH, Australia -- Poland defeated Canada 2-1 at the Hopman Cup on Sunday,
leaving Milos Raonic and Eugenie Bouchard with a 1-1 group record at the
eight-nation mixed team event.

Grzegroz Panfil, a substitute for injured Wimbledon semifinalist Jerzy
Janowicz, stunned the 11th-ranked Raonic 7-6 (1), 6-3 in the biggest upset of
the day. Panfil holds the No. 288 position in the world rankings.

In the women's match, fifth-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska outlasted Bouchard
6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-2. The 19-year-old Canadian is ranked 32nd in the world.

Raonic and Bouchard later teamed up for a 6-3, 5-7, 10-3 mixed doubles win
over Radwanska and Panfil. The Czech Republic swept defending champion Spain
3-0 in the other tie Sunday.

The Canadians opened the tournament with a win over Australia and will close
out the round robin Thursday with a match against Italy.

Panfil, 25, lost his only career match at the ATP level back in 2006. Raonic,
from Thornhill, Ont., came out firing but was overwhelmed by the inspired
underdog in 81 minutes.

"I was sloppy at the start and then he closed out the match incredibly
(well)," Raonic said.

The 23-year-old Canadian won the Lionel Conacher Award earlier in the week as
The Canadian Press male athlete of the year. Raonic is also gearing up for
the Australian Open, which begins in two weeks time.

"The time to be playing my best tennis is after January 13," he said. "Of
course I hate to lose, I want to win these kind of matches. But it's not the
end of the world.

"This is also a training week for us and I'm pleased to have three days now
to work on things."

Bouchard put in a solid effort against the more experienced Radwanska in a
match that lasted two and a half hours.

"I felt like I didn't play well in the first set, I lost a few games in a
row," Bouchard said. "But I was happy to at least turn it around and make it
a match.

"I was a bit tired at end and she kept her level up all the way. It was
encouraging that I was able to raise my game, but I need to keep that level
more consistently."

Bouchard saved three match points in the second-set tiebreaker before
converting on her first set point to pull even.

"I was trying to stay with her in the second set, but she's a tricky player
and gets a lot of balls back," she said. "I missed a few of my finish shots.
It's always disappointing to lose, I need to do some more work and get more
consistency into my game.

"But I did serve well and put pressure on her. I just hit a few too many
mistakes."

Bouchard won the Bobbie Rosenfeld Award earlier this week as The Canadian
Press female athlete of the year.
