The thought of sending John Lackey to the Padres gets a lot of people
excited, right?

But not so fast. The San Diego Union-Tribune has reported that the San Diego
Padres "have internally discussed the possibility of acquiring starting
pitcher John Lackey from the Red Sox, if the Red Sox agree to eat most of
Lackey’s contract."

That's great, right? Well, not really. Like in the case with Julio Lugo, to
get rid of a stinker of a signing, you have to eat a lot of their contract to
make them appealing to the receiving club. In Lackey's case, you're probably
going to have to eat a majority of what he's being paid, buy the acquiring GM
a Lexus, and buy a Rolex for everyone in the baseball operations department.

Lackey still has three guaranteed years remaining on his contract worth
$45.75 million, and his contract states that the Red Sox must pay him an
assignment bonus of $500,000 if he is traded. Lackey also has a club option
for 2015, but if there is a trade, I'm assuming that the Red Sox will
negotiate with any receiving team that they will having nothing to do with
paying for that option, so exercise at your own risk.

So here's my take on the whole thing: Don't trade Lackey to a National League
team. My reasoning is simple. Essentially, you're going to be paying between
$30-40 million just to open up a rotation spot if you send Lackey to the
National League. Is that what you really want? Because you still have to pony
up to fill the void.

所以我覺得，不要把他丟給國聯。

The point that I'm trying to make is that if you absolutely have to eat a
significant amount of money to get rid of Lackey, at least send him to an
American League team. That way, you're weakening the enemy. And I know this
sounds mean, and possibly that I'm joking, but I'm 100% serious.

If you're going to be paying Lackey to pitch for another team, at least pay
him to pitch against you. In the long run, the Red Sox will have a better
chance at winning more games during a season with Lackey pitching against
them and not for them, and that's the harsh truth.

If you're going to be paying Lackey to pitch for another club, at least pay
him to sabotage a competitor's chances of winning every five days, and not
some National League team that has no bearings on the outcome of the Red Sox'
season. With the worst single-season ERA of any pitcher in Red Sox history
and more personal problems than Lindsay Lohan, the man is a ticking time
bomb. Let him explode somewhere else in the American League.

真的，你要賠錢賣的話，至少讓自已的競爭對手少贏起場球賽，五天炸一次
而不是丟給哪個影響不到紅襪球季的國聯球隊。
紅襪史上單季最糟糕 ERA，問題比琳賽蘿涵還多的傢伙，是個不定時炸彈
要炸就讓他在美聯炸吧。
