Ozzie, Reinsdorf meet, but status still up in air - 美國職棒

CHICAGO -- Ozzie Guillen met with White Sox owner Jerry Reinsdorf for about a
half hour Monday morning to discuss his future with the club, but the manager
said his status with the team remains unchanged at this time.

Meeting in Reinsdorf's office at the United Center, Guillen said he and
Reinsdorf exchanged ideas about the direction of the ballclub and Guillen's
role with the team, but did not set a timetable for reaching a concrete
decision. Reinsdorf declined to comment through a team spokesman on his
meeting
with Guillen.

Though Guillen is under contract through 2012 -- his option for next season
was
picked up before the season began -- he has made it known in recent weeks that
he does not want to return with just the single year left on his contract.

"I told him the way I feel like I always do. And he talked to me about how he
feels about me, my family, the team and the organization," Guillen said. "But
I
left there -- I'm not going to say empty-handed -- because I left there with
my
ideas and what I want. And that's it."

Part of the issue for Guillen is simple respect. Entering Monday's game, he
had
a 677-617 record over eight years at the helm on the South Side, including two
American League Central titles and one World Series crown. And part of the
issue is security -- job security for him and financial security for his
family. With the club about to close out its third losing season on his watch,
Guillen acknowledged that it's not the best time to ask for an extension, but
he reiterated Monday that he needs one in order to stay.

"The problem's not resolved," Guillen said. "I told [Reinsdorf] that I don't
want to come here with the same contract I have for next year. I think I've
earned a little bit more than that."

With news of Jack McKeon's intention to retire at season's end, there likely
will be speculation about the Marlins' interest in him. But you won't hear a
word about Florida from Guillen.

"You never hear me talk about that. You never did," Guillen said. "Did I ever
say I wanted the Marlins out of my mouth? No, that's their problem. If they
want me, they should. I'm good at what I do.

"They should. Everybody can want me, but it's one thing if they can get me.
It's not easy like, 'OK I'm going to get you and you're going to come here.'
No, it's a process. If the Marlins want me, good for them. But I moved to
Chicago. I moved here, I have my house here."


He could grant Guillen the multi-year extension discussed during two meetings
over the past three days and hope that he and general manager Kenny Williams
can get past their differences and work constructively together moving
forward.
He could try to move Guillen to the Marlins, much like the A's did with Chuck
Tanner in 1976 and the Mariners did with Lou Piniella in 2002.

Ultimately, though, Reinsdorf could inform Guillen that he wants him to honor
his contract for 2012. That could lead to a precarious situation for Guillen,
who prides himself on not walking away from even the toughest of challenges.

"He knows I wouldn't like to come back," said Guillen when asked about
returning simply for 2012, even if Reinsdorf tore up the option and increased
his base salary. "I say that three weeks ago. I think I'm better than that. I
think I give a lot of good things and a lot of headaches, too.

"Definitely I'm not a piece of gold. I give them a lot of headaches. I might
give them more headaches than satisfaction. I don't know. ... I think whatever
happens, happens and move on right away in the right direction. Both sides.

"My direction is make money and make my family happy and hopefully win
somewhere else."

On Friday, Guillen and his wife, Ibis, leave for a trip to Spain, so a
decision
could be rendered before they depart. It's also a decision that could take a
few weeks to settle out.

"It's very painful, but this is a business and I want to know what's my
stance," Guillen said. "That's the only thing I can do in life, just baseball
things. I will make all my money [from] baseball and ... it's hard for me to
put this man in that situation. Very hard because I know he don't deserve
that.

"Life is about money. People don't believe that, but people are happy after
they make money. I have to make money out of somewhere. I'm not a doctor or a
lawyer, where you'll have a job for the rest of your life."
