New Haven - Justine wins her 5th WTA title of the Year

Justine won her 5th WTA title of the season on Saturday, and her first in New
Haven. The swashbuckling Belgian played outstanding tennis upon return to the
American hardcourts throughout the week. Lindsay Davenport retired the final
match from 6-0 1-0. The Belgian tennis icon now heads straight to New York
City with Pilot Pen match play mission accomplished, and ready for the
dangerous battles ahead.


The match started well for Justine as she flew away from the first
breakpoint, and never looked back after 22 minutes of play. Lindsay called
for a medical trainer, and retired the match from 1-0 in the second set with
a shoulder problem.

Final score: 6-0 1-0(ret)

Justine would certainly have preferred to have played a full match, but after
six weeks of rest New Haven enabled her to reignite those winning ways again
on hardcourt. The most notable improvement was hyper aggressive intense play
without the tension for the enigmatic Belgian. A cleaner service game was
also brought out for fine tuning. The Kuznetsova match was the prime example
of a new found maturity in Justine's tennis this week. Double H will play her
US OPEN first round match on Monday at 11:30 am (EDT) on Arthur Ashe Stadium.
