Mailbag: Was Lugo contract prudent?
Beat reporter Ian Browne answers Red Sox fans' questions

Why did the Red Sox sign Julio Lugo for so long and for such a large salary?
Obviously, in retrospect of last season, one could question the contract. But
before Lugo even wore a Boston uniform, his stats weren't that impressive. He
batted over .300 only once, his power numbers were never that great and his
stolen-base count isn't all that high. Yet he still gets $36 million?

The Red Sox felt that Lugo's numbers would spike a little bit amid the cozy
confines -- not to mention the energy -- of Fenway Park. Obviously, they were
wrong in year one. But in any four-year deal, I wouldn't make a judgment
after one year, especially when you consider the adjustment period. I think
we will all have a much better read on Lugo by the end of this season.

sign Bartolo Colon to a Minor League contract with an invitation to Spring
Training?

Colon has been ineffective and injured the last two years. Though he is
definitely a big name, the Red Sox have no reason to think that he would be
any more effective than Clay Buchholz, Julian Tavarez or Kyle Snyder. The Red
Sox think they have the pitching depth within the organization to withstand
Schilling's injury.

ㄎ胖在過去兩年裡面一直受到手術傷痛影響並且無法展現出其能力。即便是他曾經

It is definitely a case of looking ahead, but what are the chances that the
Red Sox are going to pursue C.C. Sabathia as a starter for next year? His
contract with the Indians will expire and it does not look like he will
re-sign.

As an organization, the Red Sox aren't big on investing big and long-term
payouts to starting pitchers. This is, in large part, due to the uncertain
health that comes with pitching. I'd guess that Sabathia will wind up
somewhere else.

Yes, Kielty signed a Minor League contract. I highly doubt the Red Sox will
break camp with both Kielty and Crisp on the roster.

Buchholz claims to be faster than Jacoby Ellsbury. If he's that quick, will
the Red Sox ever consider inserting him as a pinch-runner?

I could see that happening in the 14th inning of a postseason game or
something. Unless it was a drastic situation, I'd be surprised if the Red Sox
took a risk on Buchholz suffering a leg injury or something of that nature.

I just read an article that said Manny Ramirez is looking forward to the

feeling OK because that isn't very "Manny being Manny"-like. Don't get me
wrong. I would love to see him stay with the Sox after this season, but that
is just an unusual twist.

Since the beginning of 2007, Ramirez has seemed to reach inner peace about
playing in Boston. I'm not sure what happened to change things, but he now
seems to love everything that comes with playing for the Red Sox. Ramirez
didn't make a single wave last year. General manager Theo Epstein started
last Spring Training by saying that Ramirez needed to be accountable to his
teammates, and he was just that.

Why do you think that the Red Sox only gave Kevin Youkilis a one-year deal?
He is an awesome first baseman and he just got a Gold Glove last season. I
don't think he is easily replaceable.

I think you misunderstand the way the contract structure works. The Red Sox
have Youkilis under their contractual control for another three seasons. A
player needs six years to become a free agent. So expect the Red Sox to keep
signing Youkilis to one-year deals until then, unless the sides find common
ground on a longer-term deal that works for both sides.

我認為你對於合約關係的運作有點誤解了。襪子們對於光頭的合約還有三年，代表他
