Mariners going young with their managerial candidates
The Seattle Mariners have announced the candidates they'll be talking to in
the first round as they look for a new manager, and the key word appears to
be new.
Starting with Boston bench coach Brad Mills, who is in Seattle today, all
seven candidates would be first-time big league managers.
The others include White Sox bench coach Joey Cora, Diamondbacks third base
coach Chip Hale, Red Sox third base coach DeMarlo Hale, Cardinals third base
coach Jose Oquendo, Triple-A Portland manager Randy Ready and A's bench coach
Don Wakamatsu.
Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik, who is meeting with Mills today, is
reserving the option of opening up the process to more candidates as he goes
along.
''I have done a lot of work and made a ton of phone calls talking to people
all around the game as we look for the right guy to manage our club next
year,'' Zduriencik said. ''I am looking forward to sitting down with each
candidate and getting his thoughts on how he can help us with our goal of
building this franchise into a World Series winner.''
This list doesn't include Ned Yost, who was the manager in Milwaukee for all
but the last two weeks last year, or Bobby Valentine, who has managed in
Japan and with the Rangers and Mets and goes back a long way with Zduriencik,
or the names of any other veteran managers.
Jim Riggleman, who managed the Mariners the second half of last season, and
Willie Randolph, who was hoping to get a shot in Seattle after getting cut
loose by the Mets last year both are nowhere to be found on the list. What
those two and other veteran managers have to hope for is that after this
first round of interviews this week the Mariners decide they need experienced
leadership.
Right now, however, Zduriencik seems comfortable without it.
