Lee wins but more Brits crash out

Martin Lee produced a dominant display to march into round two by
beating Dick Norman 6-2 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4).

The British number six made the perfect start by breaking the giant
Belgian to love and quickly raced into a 4-1 lead before closing out the
first set.

He then played two perfect tie-breaks to set up a tie with Jarkko
Nieminen.

But Joshua Goodall lost 6-4 7-5 7-5 to Melle van Gemerden and Alan Mackin
lost in an epic to Marcos Baghdatis 6-4 6-7 (4-7) 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 6-2.

Highlights: Wimbledon day three

Wildcard Lee equalled his best Wimbledon performance with his victory -
reaching the second round for the fourth time in six appearances.

He was always in control against his experienced opponent and now faces
his former practice partner and 22nd seed Nieminen, who reached round two
with a 6-2 6-4 7-5 defeat of Brazil's Marcos Daniel.

Afterwards Lee, currently 252 in the world rankings, said he was
determined to return to the world's top 100. At one point he considered
retiring from the game but regained his appetite for the game after a holiday
in Sharm El-Sheikh.

I got to 94 in the world and I know I can get higher. That's what drives me on
Martin Lee

"I actually missed the bombs there by two days and thought to myself I was
quite lucky," he said.

"I didn't really know if I was going to play tennis competitively again but
when I came back I was gagging to play it again.

"I got to 94 in the world and I know I can get higher. That's what drives me
on.

"I've done it on my own. Three years out of the game with injuries cost me a
lot. I owe a few people some money that I will be able to pay back now."

Basingstoke qualifier Goodall, ranked 390 in the world, produced a
battling display against his Dutch opponent but was eventually outclassed on
Court 17.

He fired two aces to take the opening game but lost his serve in the
seventh, allowing van Gemerden, ranked 106th, to take the set.

Goodall, 20, made a steady start to the second, but neither player could
take control of the match.

Van Gemerden finally came out on top, and will now play Mardy Fish, who
upset fellow American and 17th seed Robby Ginepri.

Mackin's wait for a Wimbledon victory will go on

Mackin was finally beaten in an extraordinary battle with this year's
Australian Open finalist and 18th seed Baghdatis.

He lost the first set but then won his first-ever set at Wimbledon to
level the match.

He was 4-1 down in the third but came back and saved two set points to
force another tie-break which he won to go ahead in the match for the first
time.

Mackin then led 3-0 in the fourth set but the Cypriot clawed his way back
to 3-2 before having to take an injury timeout for a back problem.

After returning to level the set, Baghdatis then collapsed behind the
baseline and needed more treatment - this time for an injury to his right
knee.

He recovered again to break for a 4-3 lead and Mackin missed a chance
to break back although he did manage to break back to take the score to 5-5.

Baghdatis broke once again to lead 6-5 and then served out the set.

Mackin's leg needed attention before the fifth set and Baghdatis looked
very ill in the corner of the court but once play resumed he somehow found
the strength to take charge.

Mackin, playing his first five-set match, had no answer and bowed out
after a marathon encounter.

Bloomfield was playing in the second round for the first time

Norfolk's Richard Bloomfield suffered an agonising late-night defeat in
Wednesday's final match - as he lost to 19th seed Tommy Haas at 2130 BST.

The Norfolk professional was beaten 6-3 6-4 7-6 (7-4) and will rue
missing the chance to extend his stay.

He led the tie-break 4-2 but then lost five points in a row to crash out.

The first set took just 27 minutes as Bloomfield failed to repeat the
heroics of his win over Carlos Berlocq and although he improved it was not
enough.
