Last year’s Wimbledon champion reveals who gives him fashion advice and why
he avoids the gym

Rafael Nadal is the world number two and has won six Grand Slam singles
titles. A knee injury forced him to pull out of Wimbledon this year.


I’ve decided to put my muscles away.

I used to wear sleeveless T-shirts all the time on court, but now I’ve got a
brand new look – I’ve moved on to polo shirts. Sleeveless T-shirts give you
real freedom of movement and they keep you cooler in matches, but I just
thought it was time for a change.
以前我總是穿無袖打球，但現在我做了改變 - 我換成polo衫了，無袖讓你可以完全

Away from the court I always wear casual clothes.

You’ll find me in jeans and a T-shirt or a polo shirt teamed with a jacket –
I just put on whatever I feel comfortable in.

I’ve got a fashion secret: my mother tells me what to wear.

I still take advice from my mum on what clothes look good on me. I used to
listen to her a lot more, but I’ve started to choose my own things from time
to time.

Like a lot of sportsmen, I find trousers can give me serious problems.

I often find it difficult to find a pair that fits me well. The way I’m
built means I have muscular thighs and calves and a thin waist, so trousers
very often don’t fit. They’re either right for my waist and I can’t get
them on, or big enough to clear my thighs and really baggy around the waist.
Usually I end up wearing the bigger pair and holding them up with a belt.
我很難找到合適的褲子。因為我的腿很粗壯，但腰很細，所以褲子老是找不到對
的尺寸，要嘛是腰對了大腿卡住，不然就是腿ok腰太鬆。通常我還是選大一點尺寸再來繫

I do love a headband.

I started wearing them when I got seriously into tennis, at about 13. I’ve
got dozens of them in lots of different colours.

都不一樣。


Body art isn’t for me.

I’ll never have a tattoo – I just don’t like them, and when you’re old
they can look a disaster. As for piercings, I don’t like them on men.

I’d be lost without my iPod.

I travel so much I couldn’t bear to be without it – it means I can listen
to my favourite Spanish and Latin artists any time I want. I like listening
to both styles of music before I go on court, as they’re upbeat and
energetic – they get me in the mood. I also love Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams.

Skincare is vital for me as I’m out on court all day in the sun.

The only problem is that it’s hard to use creams during a match because they
can get in your eyes and sting.

People think of me as an aggressive, youthful player.

I don’t spend much time in there and I never have done – I just don’t see
why. I only ever run when there’s some point to it – say, if it’s in a
game of tennis. I do a lot of aerobics in the pre-season period, but after
that I keep fit by playing in tournaments. I also love playing football – my
preferred position is striker. I can’t play as often as I’d like because of
the injury risks.
