2007 Davis Cup captain, Patrick McEnroe updated the press of Andy’s injury
status and the race to get fit for Davis Cup.
Earlier, an ATP spokesman confirmed the MRI showed Andy to have a grade one
strain of the hamstring.
Patrick McEnroe was pleased with the results of the MRI scan,
“The good news at least is that it is not torn, but it is a hamstring so
that is kind of tricky.”
With regards to next weekend’s Davis Cup tie, Andy’s participation won’t
be known for another few days,
“The word is from Andy that he is going to do everything he can to try to
play in Davis Cup. Of course that is great news to my ears, the Captain’s
ears. If he can’t play, we’ll have a better idea in about three days how he
has come up. The problem is that it is not the sort of injury that you can’t
sort of play through. It will either heal quickly and he’ll be able to
practice for a few days and be able to go or he won’t and we obviously will
have to go to plan B, but he is certainly he is going to do everything in his
power to get himself a shot to play next week.”
Andy sustained the injury during his quarter-final match against Andy Murray
at the Sony Ericsson Open. Talking about the moment he first felt the injury,
Andy described,
“Murray hit a volley behind me, and I kind of lunged at it, and I just kind
of jarred something at first. And the more and more it started becoming like
a sharp pain, and then I started feeling it even when I was just kind of
cruising around the court, not even in points.”
Andy has made clear his intentions and desire to be fit for Davis Cup, and
AndyRoddick.com will have another update when we know more.
