Henin triumphs in Zurich for the second time

Justine Henin is the Zurich Open champion for the second time! The runaway
world No 1 from Belgium was just too solid for the 18th-ranked Frenchwoman
Tatiana Golovin, winning the 93-minute final 6-4 6-4 to take her ninth title
of the year.

Henin started the stronger, Golovin having to save two break points in an
eight-deuce opening game, but then the Frenchwoman opened up a 4-1 lead as
her mistakes dried up and she kept the pressure on the slightly sluggish
Belgian. But a long seventh game saw Henin fight back, and she went on to
extend her run of games to six, which included breaking in the first game of
the second set.

Had Henin converted one of three break points she had at 3-1 in the second,
she would probably have won more quickly, but her forehand broke down for a
couple of games, allowing Golovin to keep the set close. But Henin served
superbly for the rest of the match, sealing the 38th title of her career on
an ace down the middle.

“I was feeling a bit slow at the beginning,” she told the crowd, “but that
was an important game at 4-2, and it changed the match.” Golovin, who came
off second-best for the fourth time in four matches against the Belgian, told
the crowd that Henin was “an inspiration” to her.

When Henin won in Zurich four years ago, she became world No 1 for the first
time. There was no such novelty this time, as Henin came to the Swiss
metropolis assured of the year-end No 1 ranking in a year that has seen her
dominate women’s tennis, despite missing the Australian Open in the
aftermath of her divorce. She refused to say she would be back in Zurich next
year, but promised to “do my best to be back”.
