Press Enterprise: Marcus Slaughter signed a two-year contract with the Miami
Heat on Monday, the Riverside native said.
Slaughter, a 22-year-old forward, said he will begin playing for the Heat's
summer league team in Orlando next week following a successful season spent
in the Turkish Basketball League.
"It hasn't really hit me," Slaughter said by phone. "They want me to play
defense and rebound. My goal is to play."
The Heat brought Slaughter to Miami for a workout in May after scouting him
in Turkey, where the 6-foot-9, 228-pounder averaged 13.3 points per game with
Pinar Karsiyaka.
Slaughter had previously seen his dreams of playing in the NBA deferred after
leaving San Diego State following his junior season only to go undrafted last
June.
He attended Riverside North and Moreno Valley Valley View High Schools. He
averaged 13.9 points and 8.9 rebounds over his three-seasons at San Diego
State. His junior season, he led the Aztecs to a 24-9 record and a spot in
the NCAA tournament. He was named MVP of the Mountain West Conference
tournament and ended his playing career as the school's No. 3 all-time
rebounder.
He averaged 8.5 points and 5.6 assistants on the Lakers Summer Pro League
team last July.
