NETHERLANDS
Stekelenburg – 7.5 - Not called upon at all in the first half, the
goalkeeper made two very smart saves midway through the second period to keep
his side ahead. Conceded the late penalty, which he could not stop.
Van der Wiel – 7 - Though he was strong and positive when defending, the
right-back wasn’t totally secure. He looked nervous early in the game,
getting caught out of position on a couple of occasions and struggled to get
his positioning right. Nevertheless, executed a decent game.
Heitinga – 6 - If there was one weakness in the Dutch side, it was their
central defensive unit. The central two were cut open on several occasions
and may well have been more severely punished by a more capable attack.
Mathijsen – 6 - Didn’t function especially well alongside Heitinga and wasn
’t even under significant pressure. Too often caught out by the Slovakian
forwards, which must be a worry for Bert van Marwijk going into the
quarter-finals.
Van Bronckhorst – 6.5 - This could have been the veteran defender’s last
ever game but he will continue with his career for a few more days at least.
Showed that he is still capable of playing at the top level with an
experienced performance and was the catalyst for what proved to be the
decisive goal with his quickly taken free kick.
Van Bommel – 6.5 - Knew instinctively when to get forward and support the
more advanced Oranje players but was largely content to play a sitting role
in the midfield. Passing was woeful at times, with one simple free kick going
straight out the park, but on other occasions he spread the play superbly.
De Jong – 6.5 - Like Van Bommel, there were occasions when De Jong almost
seemed to lose his concentration, passing the ball straight out of play far
too routinely. Tackled manfully and was a significant presence in the
midfield.
Kuyt – 7 - Rarely spectacular but always reliable, the Liverpool wideman
once again gave his all for the shirt. His game can be a little too focussed
on industry, but when he got on the ball he generally used it well. Clever
run to create the second goal and showed great composure to pick out Sneijder.
Sneijder – 7.5 - The fulcrum of the Dutch side and one of the outstanding
players in the world over the last six months, the playmaker was again of
vital importance to the Oranje. A wonderful raking pass picked out Robben for
the opening goal. Always available, and scored the winning goal of the game
with a cucumber cool finish.
Robben – 7.5 - It’s clear that the Bayern Munich player is still not
completely fit, but that makes it all the more frightening the quality he can
produce. The goal he scored to break the deadlock was one he has already
struck many times this season. Tracked back to help his defence regularly and
was withdrawn early.
Van Persie – 6.5 - Faded out of the game a little after a bright start and
wasn’t at his best in front of goal. Allowed an early headed chance to be
wasted, while he struggled to find the target. Seemed frustrated when he was
withdrawn.
Substitutes
Elia – 6 – Some excellent runs in the closing stages of the game but was
ultimately wasteful with his crossing.
Huntelaar – n/a – Only given the last ten minutes.
Afellay – n/a – On the field for a matter of seconds but still mustered a
dangerous shot.
SLOVAKIA
Mucha – 6 - Will be disappointed to have been beaten at his near post by
Robben’s opening goal, but he isn’t the first goalkeeper to succumb to such
a strike. Made a series of fine second half blocks but really cost his side
when he needlessly rushed for a quickly taken free kick that he was never
going to reach. This error led to the second Dutch goal.
Pekarik – 6.5 - Restricted to largely a defensive brief, the right-back
struggled to cope with the industry of Kuyt at times. Never beaten for skill,
he did make a couple of mental lapses, including failing to get back into
position quickly enough after conceding the free kick that led to the second
Dutch strike.
Skrtel – 6.5 - Cut a frustrated figure for much of the second half of the
game as it quickly became clear that Slovakia were on their way out. A sturdy
presence in the defence, the Liverpool defender generally coped well with the
Dutch threat.
Durica – 7 - Got his toe to several dangerous balls in and around the
Slovakian box. Valued the ball when he was in possession, not tending to do
anything silly or overly lavish when granted it at his feet.
Zabavnik – 6.5 - Made a positive impression in the early stages of the
match, robbing the ball from Robben to create a good early chance for his
side. Seemed to be caught on the hop for Robben’s opening goal and it was
also the left-back who was initially marking Kuyt for the second strike.
Weiss – 6.5 - Has been one of Slovakia’s main creative forces in the World
Cup but was coming back into the team after being dropped against Italy.
Showed some nice touches in the first half and found some end product to
match it later in the second half.
Kucka – 6 - Against Italy the defensive midfielder was content to hold his
position for the vast majority of the time before breaking forward
dangerously to fizz a shot past the post. Did this against the Dutch, but was
allowed time on the ball in deeper areas as his passing lacked imagination
and often accuracy.
Hamsik – 6 - Stationed in the middle of the park, the Netherlands made sure
that the Napoli player was closely policed. As a result he struggled to get
anything going in an offensive sense, which really stifled his largely
limited team-mates. When he was given space, he looked like he may just
create, but he was largely a shadow after the break.
Stoch – 7 - Lapses in concentration meant that the Chelsea player was
occasionally casual with his first touch, and that allowed the Netherlands
the chance to pinch the ball from him during the first half. Improved
significantly after the break, posing real problems to Dutch rearguard at
times due to his directness. Also delivered several dangerous free kicks that
were well dealt with by the Dutch defence.
Jendrisek – 6 - Certainly not a shot-shy player, the left-sided player was
prepared to chance his arm from anywhere in the offensive area of the field.
This did not always lend his team well as there were often better options
available. Rarely involved after the break before being withdrawn.
Vittek – 6.5 - Scored twice in the recent victory over Italy but his main
job is as a link man. In that capacity he failed for the most part against
the Oranje as the former Lille player was sloppy with his distribution, often
taking too many touches on the ball. Struck the late consolation from the
penalty spot.
Substitutes
Kopunek – 6.5 – Brought on to try and provide Slovakia with a little more
attacking impetus with less than 20 minutes remaining.
Sapara – n/a – Given a few minutes at the end.
Jakubko – n/a – Stretched his legs in the dying stages of the match.
