Howard: 6 - The Everton ‘keeper was beaten at the near post in the early
going but made a couple of good saves after that. The stop on Asamoah in the
37th minute was the pick of the bunch. Had no chance on Gyan’s bullet.

Cherundolo: 5.5 - The full-back had his hands full with Ayew and was roasted
on more than one occasion in the first half. Ghana seemed intent to attack
the flanks and that was bad news for Cherundolo who picked up an early yellow
card and was rendered ineffective after that.

Bocanegra: 6 - The captain will not sleep easy for the next few days as he
failed to push Gyan off the ball for the game winner.

DeMerit: 5.5 – He made a couple of mistakes in the early going and was too
slow in closing down Boateng who opened the scoring. Gyan never should have
been able to muscle his way past him and Bocanegra to net the winner.

Bornstein: 6 - Another slow start hurt the USA tonight and the back line was
sloppy at times this evening with Bornstein unable to deal with the speed of
the Ghanaian wingers.

Bradley: 6.5 - He has been turning heads in this tournament with his
warrior-like performances but he was very much a peripheral figure in the
first half. Like many of his team-mates he improved after the break and had a
great chance to win the game in the 76th minute.

Clark: 4 - An absolute horror show this evening. He was preferred to Maurice
Edu but put his team in an early hole when his give-away led to Ghana's first
goal and then picked up a yellow card just moments later. He was
unceremoniously hooked in the 30th minute… of the first half.

Donovan: 7.5 - He is the engine that powers the USMNT forward but he was
struck in neutral in the first half. He really turned it on after the
interval, providing the pass to Dempsey that led to the penalty, which the LA
Galaxy star calmly struck past Kingson.

Dempsey: 6.5 - The Fulham man will be black and blue after this match as he
went down injured on a couple of occasions. Popped up with a great pass to
play Findley through and won the penalty with a feisty run in the area.

Findley: 5 - Returned to the starting XI after his one-match suspension and
should have really scored in 35th minute. Hooked at the interval after an
uninspiring 45 minutes.

Altidore: 6 - He has been hacked and harangued all tournament long but has
been guilty of missing some good chances and he spurned a great chance on 80
minutes that would have made him the hero.
Substitutions:

Edu: 6 – Came on sooner than he would have expected for the disappointing
Clark and provided a solid anchor in the middle of the park.

Feilhaber: 7 – Replaced Findley but he too failed to capitalise on a
glorious chance at the start of the second half but provided a great spark
off the bench.

Gomez: NA – Unable to find the equaliser off the bench.





GHANA

Kingson: 7.5 - Is widely regarded as Africa’s top shot-stopper and did his
reputation no harm with a great stop on Findley in the first half. He made a
series of good saves in the second half but had no chance on Donovan’s
penalty.

Pantsil: 6.5 - Nicknamed the ‘Rock of Gibraltar’, he was strong and steady
in defence, keeping a close eye on Demspey and company. He made a great
sliding tackle to deny Feilharber in the 53rd minute.

John Mensah: 7 - Made a heroic sliding tackle on Dempsey and kept his defence
corps calm, cool and collected after they were on the back foot for much of
the second half.

Jonathan Mensah: 5.5 - The teenager was dominant in the air for the first 45
minutes although his poor pass to Dempsey almost led to a goal for the USA.
He made a bigger error when he failed to get a piece of the ball and conceded
a penalty.

Sarpei: 6 - Figured to be in for a long night going up against Donovan but
the full-back held his own against the American talisman for one half at
least before he was overrun and limped off the field in the 72nd minute.

Inkoom: 6 - Did well to get forward in the second half but was caught offside
one time too many for his coach’s liking.

Annan: 6.5 - He has played every minute of the World Cup so far for Ghana and
bossed around the American midfield for the first 45 minutes until the USMNT
woke up in the second half.

Kevin Prince Boateng: 7.5 – He was the most dangerous player on the pitch
for the Black Stars and he was rewarded with his first goal for his country
and what a strike it was. Pulled up lame in the 77th minute and was forced
off.

Ayew: 7 - Roasted Cherundolo at will in the first half and posed a threat to
the USA’s back line whenever he had the ball at his feet. Faded away in the
second period but still can hold his head high.

Asamoah: 6 - A solid outing from the Udinese midfielder although he provided
a weak cross in the 27th minute when a good ball could have doubled Ghana’s
lead at the time.

Gyan: 8 - Ghana’s hero tonight often cut a lonely figure up front but he
linked up extremely well with Boateng and powered his way past both US
centre-backs to smash home the game winner in extra-time. Won’t ever have to
pay for a beer in Accra again.
Substitutes:


Lee Addy 6 – The 24-year-old will have pleased his coach with his tidy,
polished performance.
Appiah: 6 - Added a veteran presence to the side when the Black Stars looked
vulnerable.
Muntari: NA - Replaced the injured Inkoom
