Some players are known to have difficulties in the first rounds of a
tournament. If they survive, however, they hit top shape are tough to beat at a
later stage. If this applies to Novak Djokovic, there is only little that can
keep him from winning the title at the 17th GERRY WEBER OPEN. But it was a
close match against unknown Serra. Five times the Frenchman was just one point
away from pulling off a big upset, but five times the world number four bounced
back. Twice by firing an ace, once by playing a nice stop. A typical Djokovic, one might say.
It were these points that got the 22-year-old rolling. He looked very passive
against Serra, who played very precisely. There were two break points in the
first set but they were saved. Down 6-5, Djokovic lost his rhythm – 0-40. He
saved two set points but a double fault eventually sealed the first set.
He looked fresh and aggressive early in the second set, but at 2-3 he found
himself down 0-40 and was broken again. Down 5-2 and facing three break points,
the tournament was close to losing its last favourite. But with Serra looking
hesitant in the crucial moments, Djokovic turned it on, saving three match
points and two more at 3-5 and 4-5 respectively. He immediately gained the
rebreak. He broke his opponent again to go up 6-5 and then 7-5.
The third set was not as lopsided as the score might suggest, with Serra wasting
several break points. But Djokovic was the more efficient player and eventually
converted his first match point after 125 minutes. Djokovic analyzed his game
afterwards: "I was to passive. To be three metres behind the baseline is not good.
The court is slippery there. I'm still far away from my best level of playing on
grass."
