Former Nats SP Chien-Ming Wang, 35, now throws 95 mph fastball
March 17, 2016, 7:15 pm
Chien-Ming Wang last appeared in the majors in 2013 with the Blue Jays and
has never really been known for his fastball velocity. The former Nationals
starter's career-high for average fastball velocity is 93.1 miles per hour,
set back in 2006 when he was with the Yankees.
But at 35-years-old, Wang has found some extra gas for his heater. According
to a report from MLB.com, Wang is sitting at 94-95 miles per hour as he
attempts an MLB comeback with the Kansas City Royals.
Apparently Wang has been working with pitching expert Ron Wolforth, who
helped Wang improve from the sub-90s fastball he was throwing last year. Wang
spent some time in the Independent League last summer, as reported by CSN
Mid-Atlantic.
Royals pitching coach Dave Eiland even remarked that Wang looks like he did
in his mid-20s when he was one of the best pitchers in baseball.
"He looks now like the same pitcher I had 8 or 9 years ago. A little
amazing," Eiland told MLB.com.
Wang spent the 2011 and 2012 seasons with Washington. He went 6-6 with a 4.94
ERA in 21 total games with the Nats.
Wang finished second in AL Cy Young voting back in 2006 when he was with New
York. This isn't to say he's back to that form - he posted a 7.13 ERA in his
last two MLB seasons - but it does have the makings of a pretty cool story.
