late try has helped England hold off the Qantas Wallabies 26-16 at in a
physical Test match at Twickenham.
The teams were tied at 16-all midway through the second half but the host
side finished stronger, wrapping up the win with a try in the 75th minute to
Mark Cueto.
Australia made a strong start to the match, with Mat Rogers kicking a
penalty. Charlie Hodgson equalised with a penalty of his own before Rogers
put Australia ahead once again with his second penalty.
England then took the lead, giant winger Ben Cohen crashing over for a try in
the 28th minute which Hodgson converted.
England extended its lead with a Hodgson drop goal early in the second half
before the Wallabies hit back with another Rogers penalty, making the score
16-9.
Australia then drew level, Mitchell crossing for a try on 55 minutes, with
Rogers converting to set up a thrilling final quarter of the match.
However England regained control, replacement Olly Barkley inching the world
champions ahead on the hour mark with a penalty.
The home side dominated the final stages and Cueto dove over late to seal the
win.
Chris Latham was Australia's best, the fullback making a series of
electrifying runs but it wasn't enough.
The Wallabies are in action next weekend with a clash against Ireland at
Lansdowne Road.
