Cornet through in straight sets

Women’s No.15 seed Alize Cornet has progressed to the second round of
Australian Open 2009 following a straight sets win over Ukraine’s Mariya
Koryttseva on Monday.
In a tough match where both players struggled with their service games, the
18-year-old Frenchwoman eventually triumphed 6-3 6-4 in 90 minutes.
Cornet, who earlier this month made it to the quarterfinals of the Sydney
International tournament, took advantage of her break-point opportunities in
the first set to take a 5-3 lead.
Thanks to her opponent’s 21 unforced errors, Cornet went on to secure the
first set 6-3.
Three double faults in the first game of the second set by Cornet gave
Koryttseva a 1-0 lead. Koryttseva, who made it into the top 100 in 2008, then
fought hard to stay in the match, but a string of unforced errors were her
undoing. A Koryttseva double fault in the final game gave the set and match
to Cornet.
Cornet now moves on to the next round, where she’ll take on the winner of
the Andrea Petkovic/Kathrin Woerle match.
