Chicago White Sox Morning BP: Is it time to recall Chien-Ming Wang?
by Stephen Forsha 12h ago TWEET (4) LIKE (4) 1
Saturday night’s 2-1 win in the 10th inning over the Seattle Mariners was a
welcome breath of fresh air, especially from what we all had to watch this
past week, with the Chicago White Sox entering the game with a four-game
losing skid.
Conor Gillaspie‘s line drive that was the eventual game-winner in the top of
the 10th showed us the White Sox still have some fight left in them, but it
is a little too late for the White Sox to make a move in the AL Central for
that championship being 9.5 games back of the Tigers.
The same goes for the second AL Wild Card spot as they trail the Kansas City
Royals by 7.5 games.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad the White Sox won a game to help lessen the
punch in the gut that was the past seven days of White Sox baseball, but they
still have many weaknesses in the bullpen that need to be settled.
One thing I would like to see is if Chien-Ming Wang can handle the pressures
of pitching in the Majors once again. Why not sit Scott Carroll for a couple
starts in the Majors and give Wang a chance to see if he can record outs at
the MLB level once again?
Or at least put him in the bullpen.
Wang, this season in Triple-A with the Charlotte Knights and the Louisville
Bats, is 11-7 with a 3.94 ERA. In 24 starts (146.1 innings) he’s held the
opponents to a .294 batting average and just five him runs.
With the Knights, Wang is 3-2 with a 5.00 ERA in five starts. He has seven
strikeouts with the Knights, and 57 total in his Triple-A season.
His last start was on Aug. 8 against the Pawtucket Red Sox where he went just
four innings. He allowed seven runs, but of those seven runs only one was
earned. Wang did allow eight hits and two walks in that start.
What would it hurt?
It is almost the middle of August and the White Sox are all but out of any
postseason races. They need to give him a shot just to see what they have, if
not for this season, but for what I hope and believe will be a better 2015
campaign.
The White Sox really need to find some solid pitching behind Chris Sale and
Jose Quintana in the pitching rotation, because what they have right now,
mixed with their current bullpen isn’t and won’t get the job done on a
consistent basis next season. Maybe Wang could be apart of that rotation in ’
15.
I say recall Wang and give him an opportunity at the MLB level once again,
and if it doesn’t work out, OK. It would be one less thing they would have
to think about this offseason.
Thoughts?
