Handled everything in front of him with ease and typically dominated his
aerial duels. Occasionally looked vulnerable when Sunderland countered with
pace in the first half, and shares responsibility with Cahill for losing
Wickham for the equaliser.

Stood up to the threat of Johnson well and ploughed forward to provide
countless attacking overlapping opportunities. If only he was left-footed.
Unlucky to give away what appeared to be a very soft penalty on Altidore.

Unusually ponderous and indecisive on the ball and reacted to what he felt
was a foul by Larsson in the box by crudely whacking him in the face right in
front of referee Mike Dean. Lucky to escape a red card but retrospective

Worked hard
A calming influence on the midfield, using the ball sensibly and, when the
situation presented itself, incisively too. Also tested Mannone with a couple
of shots from range, without success.

Eager whenever he got the ball but with Sunderland sitting so deep he had no
space to dart into beyond the last man. Can't fault his effort but this is
not his ideal type of game.

Seems to have lost his mental edge as well as his physical one since the turn
of the year and, aside from a couple of semi-dangerous free kick attempts,
achieved nothing of note. Replaced by Ba on the hour mark.
