Chase Utley is back with the Phillies after missing 45 games: Local fan

A buzz throughout Philadelphia grew as the word spread that Chase Utley (notes)
was on his way back to the team. The Philadelphia Phillies' offense has been
completely bed-ridden after 45 games. The team, as a whole, is 23rd in runs
scored, 20th in HRs, 22nd in RBIs, 21st in hits, 23rd in on base percentage and
slugging percentage.
The above stats are just 6 of the 14 batting categories the Phillies are
below league average in, including being dead-last in the amount of doubles
they have on the season with 60.
Utley's career averages after playing 40 plus games is: 9.25 HRs, 26.5 RBIs,
.297 BA. Those numbers triple the production they've gotten from their
replacements. Pete Orr(notes) , who was optioned to the minors and Wilson
Valdez(notes) have contributed a combined batting average of .232, with zero
homeruns, and 11 RBIs.
Furthermore, if you add Utley's 40 plus game career averages to the Phillies'
dry team numbers, the team now have 44 HRs, and 197 RBIs. Those numbers
would, not only, lift the Phillies above the league average, but it would
also put them in the top ten teams in several categories.
Utley declined to comment on Sunday on his return. Most likely, he'll comment
after he's officially activated.
He played nine games at single-A Clearwater, and batted 9 for 32 (.281). It's
reported that Utley beat out an infield single, turned double plays without
significant pain the following day.
This isn't the first time Utley has been away from the game for long
stretches of time, as you know. In 2007, Utley missed 29 games because of a
broken fourth metacarpal bone in his right hand. On August 27, when Utley
returned he went 3-5 hitting one homerun, batting in two RBIs, and doubling.
He finished the season with a .332 batting average, 22 home runs, 103 RBIs
and 48 doubles.
Not to say that season is comparable to this season's injury—because it's a
knee—and he has missed the first 45 games of the season. It's not like
missing some time after already being in the swing of a season. How will it
affect Mr. Utley? If you're asking me I'm going to say: Utley is a warrior,
either way. He'll find a way to get into the swing of things and boost this
lethargic Phillies' offense.
He has been here; he's done so before. He's from the hard-knocks—what else
would you expect from a man who graduated from the same High Schizzle as
Snoop Dogg, nephew?
