Caniggia’s dubious distinction
by FIFAworldcup.com
Argentina’s Claudio Caniggia has stood out for Argentina
in past FIFA World Cup performances, but on Wednesday he
had the dubious distinction of being the first player
since 1990 to be sent off from a finals match despite not
having played a single minute.
The referee of the match between Argentina and Sweden,
Mr. Ali Bujsaim, showed his red card to Caniggia in the
second minute of first-half injury time, presumably for
a comment the Rangers forward made from the bench.
The only other player to be sent off from a final-phase
match without playing was Yugoslavia’s Srecko Katanec,
now coach of the Slovenian national team, on 30 June
1990. Ironically, Caniggia also played in that match,
a quarter-final that Argentina won on penalties.
The expulsion of a player on the bench has occurred
once in another official FIFA match. Spain’s Felip
was sent off in the 89the minute from his team’s
2-0 victory over Morocco on 20 September 2000 in
the Olympic Football Tournament.
