Before the 2014-15 season began, when the Los Angeles Lakers
were still in training camp, Byron Scott studied the way Steve
Nash moved on the court, and the Lakers head coach liked what
he saw.

“I was really excited because I did see a lot of the Steve
Nash that I had played against and coached against for so many
years,” Scott said Saturday after practice.

Scott envisioned the then-40-year old Nash, a two-time MVP,
playing between 15 and 20 minutes a night. But more importantly,
Scott hoped Nash would be around the team to help instill
professionalism and leadership into their younger players.

Nash, who formally announced his retirement Saturday, was

back injuries. He remained something of a ghost, not attending
games or practices or even taking part in the official team photo,
which made him the only Laker player on a guaranteed contract to
be absent from it.

At times, Scott said he struggled to connect with Nash in any
form, even over the phone.

-- two first-round picks and two second-round picks. The Lakers

potential 246 games with the Lakers. In his final season, during
which he was paid $9.7 million, Nash’s only obvious contribution
to the Lakers was private workouts with rookie point guard Jordan
Clarkson.

As news of his retirement rippled through the basketball

“He did everything possible to get on the court,” Scott said.
"I think [critics] should really take that into consideration.
It didn’t work out. But take a look at everything he’s done
over the course of his career, and look at him that way -- not
at what ended up happening here.”

“I thought he needed time to kind of start really focusing on
the next part of his life,” Scott said. “Sometimes guys can't

myself and [Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak], who are
ex-basketball players who’ve been in this business for a long
time -- we all understand that sometimes guys need that peace
away from the game to kind of get their head right and just kind
of figure out what they’re going to do with the rest of their
lives.”

opportunity to spend more time with him and coach him for a few
years. Obviously, that didn’t happen. But as a person and as a
basketball player, there’s nobody better.”

Scott also recalled facing Nash when he coached in New Orleans
and how his team threw different defensive looks at Nash because
if they didn't, he’d pick them apart.

“We changed up every quarter on our pick-and-roll coverage

"We didn’t do that with anybody else in the league."

Scott played with one of the league's top point guards ever
in Magic Johnson, and he said there are many similarities
between Johnson and Nash.

“They were both truly point guards who wanted to get their
teammates better shots and wanted to do everything they could
to help their teammates be better basketball players,”
Scott said. “In that instance, they’re parallel to one another.”

Scott also credited the 6-foot-3 Nash for helping the game
evolve, specifically when Nash led the Suns’ high-octane offense

modern-day Bob Cousy. He kind of brought the small-man really
back into the game. He was able to dominate the game with his
passing ability and his unselfishness.

“There’s a lot of guards that are in this league today that
looked up to Steve and the way he played the game and the way
he approached it. I think that’s fantastic. He’s a guy that
definitely has changed the style and changed the way the smaller
players in this league look at the game of basketball.”

奉詔前來紫禁城演武，勝者可入宮面聖。

永和宮主殿旁之大校場，賽事如火如荼，采聲如雷。場邊俞總兵
正在室內納悶，忽人報曰：「田千戶來訪。」俞請入見。其人乃俞總
愛將，姓田，單名一個括字。田括曰：「吾欲向俞總報喜，下場對手
為敗總，勝利垂手可得。」敗總兵，原姓史，字考特，因其歷年比武
戰無不敗，眾人戲稱其為敗總。

俞總皺眉答曰：「汝不知敗總實乃最強對手，吾不欲勝，偏輸不
了此人。」田括曰：「何長他人志氣，滅自己威風？勝則勝耳，何需
求敗？」

俞總嘆曰：「汝不知內情，御前比武乃為太后挑選男寵之參考，
吾不欲入太后法眼，敗總亦然。」田括曰：「季太后？」俞總曰：
「先帝早逝，季太后正值如狼似虎之年，故需藉此盛事，挑選強者
入宮承歡。」田括愕然。

俞總曰：「每年比武之前十六強，將進內宮晉見季后，若無法令
季后滿意，則人間蒸發，屍首難尋。故知情者如吾，皆稱此御前比武
為季后選拔賽，避之唯恐不及。」

田括曰：「季后選拔賽？此言當真？」俞總曰：「半句不假。去
年此時，火箭營之麥總兵晉級，卻無法令季后滿意，沒幾晚就被掘沙
了。」田括驚曰：「掘沙？」俞總曰：「掘沙坑活埋之意，內宮傳聞
是因為口臭和雞雞太小，惹惱了季后之故。」

田括曰：「然則歷年優勝入宮仍有生還者，例如馬刺營之波總兵
與熱火營之賴總兵，又是何故？」俞總曰：「汝只知其一，不知其二。
波總採道家輪休養生密技，方才挺過季后一番無情摧殘。賴總雖僥倖
生還，卻因出宮後口味太重，不但美妾劉碧嬌出走，還不知從哪尋來
白鞭，每晚命人狂抽己身呢！」

田括驚曰：「若真如此，此次比武果然該敗。」俞總曰：「吾亦
尋思詐敗，汝可有良策賜教？」田括曰：「敗總乃汝之舊識，汝可知
其弱點？」俞總曰：「敗總此人，深不可測，若單比詐敗，吾不及其
萬一。尋常高手求敗，身體仍會反射自保，唯有此人，招招求敗，將
己身要害往對手刀劍上送，且不著痕跡，非常人所能。」

兩人正沉吟之際，有人報曰：「下場比武即將抽題，有請俞總兵
上場。」田括曰：「眼下唯有見招拆招，隨機應變了。」俞總稱然，
苦笑推門而出。

大校場上，鼓聲隆隆。太監總管高舉紙捲，大聲宣讀曰：「下場
比賽主題：弓術！請史總兵與俞總兵開始準備！」場下田括大喜曰：
「天佑吾主，俞總弓術如神，且零點四秒之射速舉世無雙，若要比射
不中，自是百發百不中，此戰必敗無疑。」唯其身旁俞總臉色卻如槁
木死灰，顫曰：「汝可見敗總手上之弓？」

只見對面史總兵好整以暇，手上一把樸素木弓不甚顯眼，田括曰：
「不知此弓有何名堂？」俞總曰：「此弓大有來頭，乃是上古之際，
后羿射日所用之弓，別名落日弓。」田括驚曰：「莫非是傳說中之
"吳仙伐、羿鑄弓"（※註一）？」俞總曰：「正是嫦娥奔月後取仙人
吳剛所伐桂木，交給后羿親手調整所成之神弓。傳聞此弓通靈，射出
之箭會轉彎追蹤目標，若不想射中亦然…」

見俞總喪氣，田括曰：「既然此弓通靈，只要吾主比賽當中能激
起敗總求勝意志，未嘗不會命中目標？」俞總嘆曰：「若如此，吾當
堅持至對方射中。」

日正當中，比賽已開始四個時辰。敗總臉上開始冒汗，顯然意外
此次對手如此難纏。十丈以外，兩人之目標靶上皆插滿箭。但俞總之
箭總是射偏到敗總靶上，敗總之箭則都轉彎到俞總靶上。雙方分數仍
僵持不下：零比零，大殿上觀賞比賽的明神宗，臉色也越發難看。

為了打破平局，史總兵發言中斷比賽曰：「吾與俞總兵皆久居關
外，習慣騎獵，不擅射擊死物。請總管大人告知聖上改用飛靶，自當
分出勝負。」神宗正覺無聊，允諾後比賽繼續。

卻說這靶如何能飛？原來是將數百隻大鴿釋放到空中，令射手同
時發箭，以射落鴿子較多者獲勝。然此言實乃敗總毒計，要在數百隻
鴿的空隙中讓箭穿越，而不中任何一隻，難度大增。相較之下，箭射
出後還會轉彎的敗總，自然占盡優勢。

果不其然，只見俞總瞧準空隙，一箭發出，卻有隻不長眼的鴿子，
突然加速飛行，反衝箭矢路徑而來。大鴿哀鳴落地，俞總獲勝。眾人
報以熱烈掌聲，俞總卻是有苦自己知。

下場後，史官前來詢問雙方心情並記錄之。

敗總面帶微笑曰：「吾敗後心情甚差，看來只好回家斃了大鴿。」
見此笑話太冷，複補充曰：「此乃玩笑，吾家中沒養寵物，更沒大鴿。

俞總則是搖頭嘆曰：「勝敗總乃兵家常事，沒人會為此感到高興。」
