Although Danny Ainge and his staff have logged a lot of airline miles the
last two years scouting Yi Jianlian, the 7-foot Chinese forward some have
projected as a top-five pick, someone else in the Celtics [team stats]
organization may have a better perspective on the athletic big man.

“I dunked on the guy from China,” Al Jefferson [stats] said last week
with a kind of casual pride, referring to their meeting during an
international youth game while the C’s forward was still in high school.

“He didn’t have a good game, though. It wasn’t anything you could
judge him by, probably.”

One thing, however, was clearly apparent. Whatever his other gifts, Yi is
decidedly a new-age big man; the interior is not his territory.

“Nah, he’s more of a Dirk (Nowitzki),” Jefferson said.

One member of the Celtics organization especially high on Yi liked the
mention of another comparative name.

“You’re on the money with Andrea Bargnani,” he said of Toronto’s
jump-shooting center. “The kid is great, and that’s a good comparison for
him.”
