Bartoli bests Briton

By Tom Kelly

Women’s No. 16 seed Marion Bartoli is through to the second round of
Australian Open 2009 after cruising past Briton Melanie South, 6-2 6-4.

The 2007 Wimbledon finalist looked uncomfortable in the heat on Show Court 3
and despite a second-set lapse, was able to ease past the world No. 102.

Bartoli raced out to a 4-2 lead as her opponent sprayed shots off both sides.

A netted forehand from South allowed the Frenchwoman to close out the first
set.

For a brief time in the second, it looked as if South was going to storm back
into the match and level at a set apiece.

She broke twice for a 4-1 lead, sending a string of blistering winners past
Bartoli.

But the world No.17’s concentration lapse was only momentary; netted balls
from South handed back both breaks as she surrendered the second set and the
match 6-4.

Bartoli will now play Tsvetana Pironkova after the Bulgarian defeated
Croatian Karolina Sprem 6-0 6-4.
