Another day, Another situation
15/04/2006:

Justine defeated Dinara Safina on Friday at the quarterfinals 6-4 6-1. She
has now reached her 5th semi-final out of 6 events entered in 2006, and in
her 3rd semi-final in the Family Circle Cup. Justine shares her thoughts on
the match, rediscovering her clay sliding technique, and her genuine
enthusiasm for the city of Charleston.

It seemed like a really tough first set. How big a confidence boost is it to
win that going into the second set?
"Yes. It was a tough one. She was playing very consistent, and I was getting
better and better, but I was sometimes playing too short, and especially on
her backhand side. She has a great backhand, especially down the line, and I
knew I had to put pressure on her forehand and try to attack the ball and
give pressure on that side, but it wasn't easy in the beginning, and then
game after game I was feeling better and better. And the win of the first set
gave me a lot of confidence so I could build my game and play much better in
the second, so I'm pretty happy the way I played today. I was feeling much
better on the clay, so that was good."

Were you able to get to the net as much as you wanted to, especially early?
"Yes. It's not easy. I won pretty important points at the net, but at the
beginning of the match she was hitting the ball very hard and pretty long,
and I didn't have many, many opportunities to go. So you just have to wait
for the opportunities. If they don't come, you just have to be patient and
try to organize your game and build all your points."

Justine, your game, looks like you're going for shots that you didn't go for
as much in the first two matches. It's starting to really happen in this
third match?
"Yes. I think that's what I explained the last few days. It takes a little
bit of time to get in the rhythm, to feel better, feel more comfortable on
the surface, especially with the slides and everything. When I have to slide,
and I'm still not very used to it this year, and that's probably my biggest
weapon on the clay. I adjust very well, but it takes a few matches, and now I
just have to see day after day and try to get better, and build everything
every day, yeah."

Justine, that second set you seemed to be able to do pretty much anything you
wanted to. Do you think you're playing your best tennis going into the semis
now?
"I never like to talk about that because I just try to be very focused. I
think that was the big difference from the last few days is that I've been
very concentrated on every point, a lot of intensity. So that's true that I
played good tennis, but I can always improve my game and do better, even if
it was very good today."

What about the last two years? You've got a long streak here.
"Yes. I'm going to just try to keep winning. What happened in the past is far
away now, and it's a place I like a lot. I love this tournament. It's a great
organization, like I said, and I really enjoy to come here in Charleston.
When I do my calendar, it's a tournament that I for sure want to play; so
it's great. But tomorrow is another day, another situation, another good
opponent, and we will see what's going to happen."

Yesterday you said all you would think about is Safina oday. What about
today? What are you looking at in terms of who you play tomorrow?
"Yes. Tomorrow, they still have to play tonight. It's going to be anyway, a
tough match; semis always tough. It means all the players are playing very
good tennis, and I've played both(Patty and Nathalie) of them pretty often.
So, we'll see. I think it's going to be interesting, and a tough match for
sure."

"Thank you."

Like a masterful chef, Justine will add more layers, textures, colors, and
flavours to her tennis game as the season progresses. The world's greatest
1-handed backhand will now face Patty Schynder on Saturday at about 14:00 hrs
(Est) on center court to play for a spot in the big finale on Sunday.

Allez Justine!
