The Royals have re-signed Alex Gordon to a one-year, $4 million deal,ccording to MLB.com reporter Jeffrey Flanagan, Gordon has spent his entire 13-year MLB career in a Royals uniform after they made him the second-overall pick in the 2005 draft out of the University of Nebraska. In 1,703 career games, Gordon has hit .258/.339/.413 with 186 home runs and 113 steals, and he has been worth 36.6 WAR, according to Baseball Reference. He is a three-time All-Star, has won seven Gold Gloves in his career, and is
perhaps best remembered for his game-tying home run in the ninth inning of Game 1 of the 2015 World Series, a game the Royals would go on to win on the way to their second championship in club history.

Gordon had been a disappointment at the plate since signing a four-year, $72 million deal before the 2016 season, but his defense has remained top notch, earning him Gold Gloves in each of the last three seasons. Last year his bat enjoyed a resurgence as well, and he hit .266/.345/.396 with 13 home runs, posting a 96 OPS+, his best mark since 2015. The Royals turned down a $23 million mutual option for this season, giving him a $4 million buyout.

Gordon had said last summer he was0 percent sure he would returnnd would take theff-season to consider whether or not he wanted to return. He had always insisted that the Royals were the only team he was willing to play for.

With Gordon in the fold, the Royals’ outfield picture looks clearer. The Gold Glover will likely start in left field with Whit Merrifield in center and Hunter Dozier moving to right. Brett Phillips and Bubba Starling, both of whom are out of options, will compete for reserve roles. Also in the mix are Ryan McBroom, who is also capable of playing first base, and rookie speedster Nick Heath. Prospect Khalil Lee, who spent last season at Double-A Northwest Arkansas, could also be ready at the some point
next season.
