Spain's Feliciano Lopez upset eighth seed Andre Agassi 6-2 7-6 in the

first round of the Hamburg Masters on Tuesday. The 35-year-old American's

first-round defeat by unseeded Spaniard Feliciano Lopez on a fridge-like

centre court at the Rothenbaum spoiled his French Open preparations.

The wintry temperature in northern Germany left eighth seed Agassi

stiff-limbed and unable to respond to a more adept claycourt opponent.

His 6-2 7-6 defeat was also demoralising for the eight-times major winner

less than two weeks before Roland Garros.

"I don't come into these conditions feeling like it's very good for my game,

I feel pretty ordinary," Agassi told reporters.

"I'm not used to that. My body doesn't respond well in these temperatures.

"It's not the same, the movement and the work that goes into the shots,

everything is so much more difficult.

"In one sense it's great preparation (for the French Open) because it is so

difficult, but in another sense it is discouraging, it is not easy."

Agassi is enjoying spending time in Hamburg with his German wife Steffi Graf

and their two young children and says he is undecided about whether to continue competing on tour next year.

"I don't know if I'm going to be anywhere next year really," he said.

"Every week I feel like I'm not sure for the next year. I'll discuss it with

the family, what we're going to do, and next year I'll play it by ear."

Despite Tuesday's defeat, the world number seven remains optimistic for

Roland Garros, where he won in 1999 to become only the fifth man to win all

four grand slam events.

"It's nice to know that this is as difficult as it's going to get. That's

something I can take from it," Agassi said.

"I'll be ready to get one or two good matches early (In Paris) and then

hopefully be at my best.

"I'm much more prepared now than I was last year."
