This week, in celebration of the WTA's 40th anniversary, wtatennis.com will
be counting down the top five moments of the last 40 years, as voted for by
you, the fans.
Your No.3 moment is Maria Sharapova's remarkable Wimbledon triumph (and Pat
Cash-esque celebration) from 2004. A product of the famed Bollettieri Academy
in Florida, Sharapova was earmarked for big things from an early age.
However, few expected her ascension up the tennis ladder to be quite so
rapid.
In just her seventh major, and at the tender age of 17, Sharapova caused one
of the biggest shocks in tennis history, defeating first Lindsay Davenport
and then Serena Williams in the final to become the third-youngest Wimbledon
champion in history.
Here's a selection of your memories from that famous afternoon…
Cristian:
My favourite moment in WTA tennis was Sharapova winning Wimbledon in 2004. It
was really impressive to watch a young 17-year-old lady beating a dominant
player like Serena on her favorite court.
Amrane Mahfoud:
Without any hesitation, it was Maria Sharapova winning Wimbledon in 2004. She
was fearless that year, beating all the greatest, including Serena in that
amazing final. Watching that match was a pure joy from the first to the last
point. Every part of me was cheering for Maria. She was unknown back then,
but she shined bright like a diamond. We were here for the birth of one of
the greatest players that women's tennis has ever produced.
Mike:
When Maria Sharapova climbed into the stands to hug her dad after winning
Wimbledon. That was a special moment.
Ivan:
It certainly is the 2004 Wimbledon final when Maria Sharapova edged world
No.1 Serena Williams. It was a moment when a new tennis legend emerged, and
eight years later she completed her Career Grand Slam. Definitely it was a
memorable moment for all Russian tennis fans!
Karl:
The first tennis match I watched from start to finish was when Maria
Sharapova blasted past Serena Williams when she was 17 at Wimbledon in 2004.
It made me want to become just as good and pick up a tennis racquet too. -
