1. Daniel Bard

Bard is a prime example of why you shouldn't judge a prospect too soon. After
a star career at UNC, Bard struggled in the minors last year, walking more
than he struck out and allowing 59 runs in 75 1/3 innings. But he's turned it
around big-time in 2008, as he allowed just two runs in 28 innings at low-A
Greenville while striking out 43 and walking just four batters. He's been
promoted to Portland, and he's still just 22.

2. Michael Bowden

The 21-year-old Bowden is widely regarded as the next bright star in the Red
Sox system; he's struck out 307 batters against just 91 walks in 309 1/3
minor league innings. With the depth in the Red Sox system, though, the Sox
can afford not to rush the 21-year-old, who currently sports a 2.83 ERA and
48 K's in 47.2 innings at Double-A Portland.

3. Clay Buchholz

Jon Lester isn't the only young Sox ace-in-waiting to have twirled a no-no at
the big league level. Buchholz, 23, rocketed through the minors with a 2.46
ERA, along with 356 strikeouts and 77 walks in just 285 2/3 innings. He is
currently on the DL, with a 2-3 record and a 5.53 ERA in 2008.

4.Bryce Cox

The 23-year-old Cox has been excellent at Single-A Greenville so far this
year after a lackluster 2007 campaign. In 2008, he's put up a 1.06 ERA with
14 strikeouts in 17 innings, saving three games.

5. Felix Doubront

The lefty from Venezuela has struggled at times in the minors, but appears to
be putting it together this year. In 36 2/3 innings at low-A Greenville,
Doubront has struck out 38 and walked just 3, all while posting a 5-1 record
and a 2.21 ERA. Oh, and he's still just 20 years old.

6. Nick Hagadone

After three starts this year, the 22-year-old Hagadone required Tommy John
surgery on his pitching elbow, which he's still waiting on because of a leg
infection that prevents him from flying. But although he won't be in game
action again until 2009, his 2007 numbers (1.85 ERA, 33 K, 24 1/3 IP) are
reason to keep a close eye on him.

7. Craig Hansen

Hansen's struggles at the big league level over the last few years are well
known; he posted ERAs above 6.00 both in 2005 (his first pro season) and
2006, as well as a 7.11 mark so far in 2008. But in the minors, Hansen has
performed better, posting no ERA higher than 3.86 in regular season play. His
control has been an issue, but he's still just 24, and that slider is too
good to give up on.

8. Kris Johnson

The 23-year-old Johnson has had his struggles at times. He had injury issues
at Wichita State, but this year he's pitched well for Portland, putting up a
3.40 ERA.

9. Hunter Jones

The big (6-foot-4, 235 pounds) lefty reliever from Florida State has put up
nifty numbers in four minor league seasons (2.85 ERA, 1.17 WHIP, 240 K). 2008
has been particularly good to the 24-year-old Jones; in 13 games at Double-A
Portland, he posted a 1.19 ERA with 26 strikeouts against 4 walks in 22 2/3
innings before earning a promotion to Triple-A Pawtucket.

10. Jon Lester

The 24-year-old lefty from Tacoma, Wash. posted impressive numbers in the
minors, winning 29 games in a starting role while striking out 446 batters in
484 innings. His 14-4 MLB record has been terrific, although his 4.28 ERA in
The Show has been worse than his minor league line. But his 3.41 ERA this
season (not to mention his no-hitter) could be a sign of things to come.

11. Justin "The Jamaican Dream" Masterson

Two games into his MLB career, Masterson sports a 1-0 record and a 1.46 ERA.
His ERA in the minors has been higher, but with a K/BB ratio of more than
three to one, there's plenty of reason to believe that Masterson will be a
major contributor for years to come.

Pauley, 24, has not had immense success at the big league level, but he's
been very solid in the minors, posting a career 3.96 ERA there. He also has
struck out 670 against just 270 walks in eight minor league seasons (four
with San Diego).

13. Chris Province

The 23-year-old Province was a 2007 draftee of the Red Sox, and his first
tastes of minor-league baseball have shown him to be quite able. After a
middling 2007 campaign in Greenville (4.91 ERA, 23/8 K/BB ratio), Province
has turned it up a notch, striking out 29 and walking just 7 in 45 1/3
innings to go along with a 2.38 ERA.
