However, the mood in the Verlander household was much different from 2016,
when two Tampa-based writers left him off the ballot entirely and Rick
Porcello narrowly won.

But it's much more likely the award didn't mean as much because Verlander and
Upton just became parents last week to a daughter, Genevieve.

"I can’t be too upset when I have this little girl waiting for her daddy off
camera!" Upton wrote on Instagram.
