Tuesday, the Arizona Fall league started. The AFL is a useful proving ground
of top prospects, players who might need to be protected from the rule V
draft, players who lost part of the year through injury, or just a player the
team wants to see more. This year the Royals haven't sent a top prospect to
the AFL, but they have sent several of the other types of players. The
players are Jacob Bodner RHP, Zach Lovvorn RHP, Jared Ruxer RHP, Matt Tenuta
LHP, Nick Dini C, Nicky Lopez SS, Elier Hernandez OF.

Let's take a look at the individual players.

Jacob Bodner is a 24 year old 2015 college draftee. He looks to be mainly a
reliever with a mid 90's fastball and an above average slider. He was good in
the rookie leagues in 2015, but was hurt by too many walks at A and A+ ball
last year. He had a much better year this year at A+ ball with 70K to 20 BB.
He is a shorter pitcher whose trouble tends to come down to the three C's-
command, control, and consistency. But, he does have the stuff to be a high
leverage reliever if he can conquer the three C's. He is not eligible for the
rule V draft.

Zach Lovvorn is a 23 year old 2012 High school draftee. He has split time
between starting and relieving. He only has so-so stuff, so a move to the pen
won't change his outlook too much. One can hope he is the next Jacob Junis,
but Junis pretty much outpreformed him at this point in his career. Lovvorn
did improve his FIP in AA this year, but that wasn't reflected in his ERA.
Lovvorn is rule V eligible, so this might be one last look to determine if he
needs to be protected.

Jared Ruxer is a 25 year old 2015 college draftee acquired from the Angels in
a trade last year. He is new to the system so I don't know as much about him.
He had an ok FIP/ERA in A+ ball this year. He split time between starting and
relieving and I don't know what track is more likely at this point. He is not
rule V eligible.

Matt Tenuta is a 23 year old 2012 High School draftee. Injuries delayed his
2015 season, he then had a poor 2016 at A+ ball. This year he got off to a
good start at A+ ball as a reliever. But he struggled after being promoted to
AA where he also was forced back into the starting rotation after injuries
decimated the Royals major league and upper minor league pitching staffs. He
is eligible for the rule V draft.

Nick Dini is a 24 year old 2015 college draftee. He has a good hit tool, but
with more contact skill than pure power. He is new to catching, but has good
athleticism. He will need to prove himself at every level, but has hit well
even with a big jump to AA ball this summer. He is not rule V eligible.

Nicky Lopez is a 23 year old 2016 college draftee. He plays an adequate
shortstop. He started the year very well at A+, but struggled after being
promoted to AA. He is a good contact hitter but with very little power. At
this point he is seen as more of a future utility infielder. He started the
AFL well going 2/5 with a run scored. He is not rule V eligible.

Elier Hernandez is a 22 year old big money signing from the 2011
international free agent pool. He has been a slow mover as he has struggled
to put his tools to full use. He has generally been better when given a
second chance at a level and has generally been young for the level. He had a
good wRC+ in 2017 across A+ and AA ball. But, his season was cut short due to
a groin injury. His BB% and K% weren't particularly good this year, but they
did improve at AA, but his ISO went down. He also maintained a high BABIP all
year long, but BABIP doesn't always mean the same thing in the minors as it
does in the majors. He is still growing into his body, but could be a monster
power hitter if everything comes together. He has the speed to play CF, but
with a strong arm and power will likely play a corner outfield. He started
the AFL well going 2/3 with 2 doubles and a walk. He was rule V eligible last
year and wasn't picked. This year the Royals won't be able to hide him. He
will either have to be added to the 40-man roster or he will be picked by
another team in the Rule V draft.
