As the Red Sox tried to emerge from the wreckage of a last-place finish in
2012, they did so with a mission of building a contender for 2013 in a
fashion that did nothing to jeopardize what appeared to be a very promising
future.

With a talented ensemble of minor leaguers reaching the upper levels, the
team signed seven free agents—none of whom required the sacrifice of a draft
pick—to compete at a time when those prospects were expected to be in the
finishing stages of their development. The idea was to construct a
competitive team for 2013 while buying time for the arrival of what general
manager Ben Cherington described as “the next great Red Sox team.”

Rather unexpectedly, the 2013 Red Sox ended up being a great team. The return
to form of a core that included David Ortiz, Dustin Pedroia, Jon Lester,
Jacoby Ellsbury and Clay Buchholz was buttressed by strong performances by
virtually every player whom the Red Sox added.

The result was a team whose strong performances ran more than 25 deep, a
versatile and deep roster that ultimately proved the best team in baseball,
winning 97 games and marching through October for a World Series
championship, the franchise’s third in a decade.

Yet as captivating a run as the major league squad offered, the activity
beneath that surface proved nearly as compelling. The Red Sox enjoyed a year
of striking progress in their farm system, with top prospects taking steps
forward in lockstep.

Both shortstop Xander Bogaerts and righthander Brandon Workman assumed
significant postseason roles, but behind them, Boston’s top prospects
produced a wealth of all-star seasons across levels that suggested the
possibility of homegrown depth in the coming years.

The emergence of Bogaerts (with 2012 first-rounder Deven Marrero not far
behind) rendered Jose Iglesias expendable at the trade deadline. Third
baseman Garin Cecchini led the minors with a .443 on-base percentage, giving
the Red Sox a depth of talent on the left side of the infield that few can
rival.

the organization featured three potential big league starters (righthanders
Allen Webster, Matt Barnes and Anthony Ranaudo) in the Triple-A Pawtucket
rotation by season’s end.

The strength of the system runs far deeper than just Triple-A, however. High
Class A Salem had a loaded roster all season. Top pitching prospect Henry
Owens, a southpaw, thrived there before moving up to Double-A, while
up-the-middle players such as catcher Blake Swihart and second baseman Mookie
Betts helped Salem win the Carolina League title.

The organization also added high-ceiling amateurs in 2013, taking lefthander

The Red Sox system is deep in many areas but does lack a prototype corner
bat, but beyond that, athletic, well-rounded players abound. Led by Bogaerts,
the next wave of Boston prospects is impressive enough to keep the club close
to its 2013 perch for some time.
