and Besiktas to victory

In our latest round-up of the action involving Chelsea loan players over
the last week, Conor Gallagher and Michy Batshuayi stole the show with two
goals apiece and there was plenty of late drama elsewhere too...

Conor Gallagher was the star of the show for Crystal Palace again, netting
twice in a 3-1 home win over Everton in the Premier League. The midfielder
opened the scoring in the first half by confidently sweeping in Andre
Ayew's pass inside the box. He saved the best for last, though. Late on,
after Everton had pulled the score back to 2-1, Gallagher curled a
brilliant shot into the top corner to make the three points safe with his
sixth league goal of the season.

His performance certainly seemed to impress Palace manager Patrick Vieira,
who said after the match: 'He was fantastic and I think when the team play
at that level as well, it allows him and some of the other players in the
team to express themselves.

'His timing to get inside the box is always good and he can finish. He
wants to improve, he is really humble, is working hard and the challenge
for him is to maintain that level to fulfil his expectation.'


Billy Gilmour made his fifth consecutive start for new Norwich City
manager Dean Smith, but despite an impressive performance they were
beaten 1-0 by Manchester United due to a second-half Cristiano Ronaldo
penalty. However, having arguably deserved a point from the game, Gilmour
insisted the performance gives him confidence for the rest of the season
with the Canaries.


'We will take real confidence from this game into Aston Villa,' he said.
'We know we can give them a good battle and take three points. I know the
results aren't quite there yet but I am sure we will get a good run soon
and we want to keep going.


'I love playing and working under the new manager. I think he has been
really good with me so far. I just need to make sure I am putting in good
performances to make sure I am playing every week.'


Armando Broja was in Southampton's starting line-up, as was 40-year-old
former Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero, making his debut for the
Saints, but it was a difficult afternoon for both as their side were
beaten 3-0 away at Arsenal.

Overseas, Michy Batshuayi could do nothing to prevent 10-man Besiktas
losing 5-0 at Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League in midweek, but
then scored two vital late goals in a dramatic comeback to beat
Kayserispor 4-2 on Sunday. After a run of five games without a win,
Besiktas were trailing 2-1 in the closing stages before Batshuayi stole
the show, scoring in the 84th and 89th minutes to turn the game on its
head, even adding an assist to make the final score 4-2 deep into added
time.

Back in England, Nathan Baxter helped Hull City make it six matches
unbeaten in the Championship but they were denied victory against Barnsley
by an injury-time equaliser, a 2-2 draw keeping them one point above their
opponents and four clear of the relegation zone.


Coventry City and second-half substitute Ian Maatsen benefited from an
even later equaliser, making it 1-1 in the 93rd minute of their fixture
away at a Huddersfield Town side which included fellow Chelsea loanee Levi
Colwill, the Sky Blues' fourth draw in five games.


Reading were without the injured Danny Drinkwater but had Baba Rahman in
their starting line-up as they travelled to promotion favourites West
Bromwich Albion, but the Ghanaian couldn't prevent them succumbing to a
narrow 1-0 defeat at The Hawthorns. Dujon Sterling also suffered a 1-0
defeat with Blackpool, who remain seven points clear of relegation despite
their third loss in a row, this time away at Derby County.


In League One, Henry Lawrence was part of the Wimbledon side which counted
themselves unlucky not to have earned all three points away at
promotion-chasing Wycombe Wanderers. The visitors took the lead in the
fourth minute and again with what looked a certain winner two minutes into
injury time, only to concede a 96th-minute penalty that made the final
score 2-2.


In Italy, Ethan Ampadu and Venezia held Juventus to a draw on home soil,
coming from behind to make the final score 1-1, the Welsh international
going off not long after they had found their equaliser. That takes the
Venetians six points clear of the bottom three.

Tiemoue Bakayoko was a late substitute for AC Milan when they hosted
Liverpool in the Champions League, but couldn't help them find the
equaliser they needed to prevent their exit from European competition this
season. He was in the starting XI as they travelled to Udinese on
Saturday, but made way as one of three half-time substitutes by the
Rossoneri before an injury-time Zlatan Ibrahimovic bicycle-kick earned
them a 1-1 draw, although it wasn't enough to prevent them surrendering
the lead of Serie A to city rivals Inter.


Having sat out their midweek draw with Rangers in the Europa League,
Emerson Palmieri came off the bench in the first half as Lyon were held to
a 0-0 draw away at Lille.
