Hong Kong's Kenny Yeung King-ho knew Justin Lee Tien-yu was a tough customer.
He just didn't expect he was that tough. His Taiwanese opponent sent the
local hero down onto the canvas with a perfectly placed right hook before
going for the kill with a barrage of punches to win the lightweight contest
in just 45 seconds at Legend 2 last night at the HITEC in Kowloon Bay.
Yeung had won impressively in January in Hong Kong's premier mixed martial
art tournament, but the 25-year-old from Taipei was a surprise package
altogether. His unexpected technical knockout came after the referee stopped
the contest when Lee threw a series of devastating punches that stunned Yeung.
"I can't believe I just won. I never expected this," said Lee, who won his
third straight mixed martial arts bout. "I expected a tough, long fight and
I'm really surprised things turned out so well for me. I really went for a
knockout from the start and that first hook landed perfectly and I went for
the kill."
For Yeung, it was a massive setback as his mixed martial arts record worsened
to two losses and one win. The 1,500-strong crowd had expected a Yeung
victory but the 28-year-old Hong Kong champion, who moved to Melbourne as a
teenager to further his training, was a huge disappointment, although he said
he will come back all the more determined to do better next time out.
Lee was the more aggressive fighter and found an opening after just 10
seconds when he threw a superb right hook that landed squarely on Yeung's
forehead. Yeung fell to the canvas but quickly got up only to receive more
punishment, before the referee stepped in to end the fight.
"I didn't expect that," said Yeung of the perfectly placed right hook. "That
caught me completely by surprise. I'm alright. I'm not hurt. I'm a bit
disappointed but that's the name of the game."
Lee's quick-fire victory was not the quickest of the night. New Zealand's
Daniel Digby lost to China's Zhang Tiequan after just 30 seconds into their
72 kilogram contest when Digby conceded the fight after a neck lock by Zhang
for a "tap-in".
In the night's most exciting bout, Australia's Adrian "The Hunter" Pang
scored a unanimous victory against tough Korean Yu Woo-sung in a 70 kilogram
bout billed as the main event.
Pang had too many weapons this time as he scored a series of punches and
kicks to hand Yu his first loss in four years.
The Australian, who spent time in Hong Kong to learn martial arts, had Yu
against the ropes as early as the first round and finished the stronger
fighter to easily win the bout much to the delight of the crowd.
