YOUTH REPORT: CHELSEA 1 WEST HAM 4
Posted on: Sat 07 May 2011
A young Chelsea side succumbed to a strong West Ham team in the last home
game of the Under 18s' season today...
Youth team manager Dermot Drummy named eight schoolboys in his starting
line-up, which was captained by Ben Sampayo at right-back.
Despite the final score, Mitchell Beeney put in a fine performance between
the posts for Chelsea while Lewis Baker troubled the West Ham defence
throughout.
Chelsea started the better side, dominating possession with calm and
collected passing but without producing any real chances on goal.
The resolute West Ham defence forced Chelsea to attempt to convert their
few chances from long range, with Amin Affane (pictured), Anjur Osmanovic,
Walter Figueira and Baker all trying their luck from distance.
But it was West Ham who took the lead against the run of play. Elliot Lee
netted the first of his eventual hat-trick by converting from close range
after the ball arrived from the left flank.
That strike buoyed the visitors' confidence and they were soon testing the
Chelsea back line further, forcing Blues keeper Beeney to tip away two
good efforts with his fingertips.
As the first-half drew to a close, West Ham were gifted a second when
Nditi brought down a troublesome Robert Hall just inside the area. The
referee had no hesitation in pointing to the penalty spot and Hall took
the spot-kick, confidently drilling to his right while Beeney dived left.
Drummy made one change at half-time, introducing Reece Mitchell for his
Under 18s debut to replace Osmanovic. But despite the change, Chelsea were
on the back foot from the restart as Beeney once again denied West Ham a
goal from close range.
Baker attempted to retaliate at the other end while Figueira continued to
test the visitors' back line but it was the travelling side who would find
the net next.
After Beeney had made another fine save to keep the deficit at two, a
mistake at the back allowed Lee to steal possession from Alex Davey before
chipping over the Chelsea keeper.
Lee secured his hat-trick 10 minutes later after dispossessing Beeney and
slotting home. It was an easy goal for West Ham's hat-trick man.
The Blues pulled one back eight minutes from time when Figueira curled a
shot into the top corner after feeding off a Mitchell ball. It was a
well-deserved goal from the young side that tested West Ham though out the
fixture.
'West Ham are a very tough side,' said Drummy after the match. 'We played
a very young side and I couldn't fault them for their efforts. We look at
these games as a learning curve. So long as the boys are trying and
pushing themselves, then they're developing and I'm satisfied.'
