Youth Cup report: Chelsea 5 Cardiff City 0
Tue 13 Dec 2016
Our defence of the FA Youth Cup began in emphatic fashion at Aldershot
this evening (Tuesday), as five goals without reply saw Jody Morris's
side advance comfortably into the fourth round.
The cup holders, winners in five of the previous seven editions of the
competition, marked their card as contenders once again as a double from
Ike Ugbo plus strikes from Mason Mount, Tariq Uwakwe and Jacob Maddox sent
Cardiff City back to Wales comprehensively beaten.
The youngsters had a blistering seven-minute spell in the second half to
credit for the significant scoreline. Leading one goal to nil after the
restart, four further strikes finished the tie with 25 minutes remaining
and ensured our cup defence began with the perfect start.
Morris started with six of those who featured in our victorious final win
over Manchester City in April, including two of the goalscorers from the
2015/16 success in Dujon Sterling and Mount. The latter captained the side
from midfield, lining up alongside Luke McCormick in the centre as the
Blues started in a 4-2-3-1 system.
Sterling provided the attacking support to striker Ugbo from the right,
with Harvey St Clair giving width down the opposite flank and Maddox
operating in the number 10 midfield role. A back four of Reece James,
Trevoh Chalobah, Joseph Colley and Josh Grant protected Jared Thompson in
goal. All but one of the starting 11 can represent England, with six
having been training at the club since the age of seven.
With the hosts having lost only two Youth Cup ties in eight years prior to
this encounter, Cardiff were fully aware of their role as the cup
underdogs at Aldershot. Nevertheless, Morris (pictured below with
assistant Ed Brand) warned in the build-up of the dangers of complacency
in knockout football and his young charges were determined to heed his
advice as they started firmly on the front foot.
Skipper Mount forced a save from Bluebirds keeper Scott Coughlan within
the opening two minutes, the Welsh stopper diving low to push the
midfielder's left-foot strike away from danger. Ugbo and Sterling had
early shots blocked before the latter utilised his fearsome turn of pace
to escape into space down the right, his teasing cross defended well at
the near post.
The warning signs continued for the visitors as Mount fired off-target and
then Ugbo volleyed over the bar following another tee-up by Sterling. It
was the 17-year-old, scorer at this venue four days previously for our
development squad, who ultimately fashioned the tie's opening goal after
17 minutes.
A neat piece of skill took him away from his man on the right and he laid
the ball invitingly into the path of Mount, who finished emphatically into
the bottom corner. April's final goalscorers had combined to open our
account for the 2016/17 campaign, with Mount netting his third of the
season.
Any lingering nerves from the holders, not that they were evident in the
opening stages, were banished with the comfort of a one-goal cushion.
Colley came close to doubling the advantage when a corner from the right
found him in space in the box, although his goal-bound strike deflected
narrowly over the frame of post and bar for a corner.
Cardiff struggled to retain the ball for any length of time in the face of
persistent pressing from the holders, with 29 minutes on the clock before
the side from south Wales registered a shot at Thompson's goal. It came
from a set-piece, a free-kick against Chalobah after the defender had
clearly won the ball, though Jarrad Welch's effort never came close to
troubling the home keeper.
The clear-cut chances continued to be fashioned down the opposite end,
with St Clair forcing a low save from Coughlan from a tight angle after a
brilliant flick from Ugbo and Sterling almost forcing an own goal from
Isaac Kelly after more positive play from him down the right channel.
From the touchline, Morris urged his team to push for a second goal before
the break and they attacked forward continuously, though the final finish
in front of goal just deceived them. McCormick sliced a left-foot effort
and Maddox cushioned the ball narrowly wide following a great move
involving Mount and Grant as the Blues went into the interval deservedly
ahead, albeit by just a solitary goal.
Uwakwe was introduced in place of McCormick at half-time, an early booking
for the midfielder perhaps playing on Morris's mind, yet the flow of the
tie picked up from where it had been left before the interval as Mount
dipped a free-kick narrowly over Coughlan's bar.
Slightly subdued in the face of a deep and dogged Cardiff defence, the
restart burst into life with four goals in seven minutes around the hour
mark. The four strikes all went in our favour, effectively shutting down
the contest with half an hour remaining. Uwakwe made it 2-0, finishing off
a move he had started with a deft finish at the near post following
Grant's cross.
There was a penalty awarded to the hosts moments later as substitute
Connor Davies was penalised for handball in the box after misjudging a
high ball in the air. It seemed a little harsh but, unfortunately for
Cardiff, Ugbo was not in a forgiving mood and he slammed the spot-kick
straight down the middle for the third.
It seemed there was now simply a desire from the holders to make a
statement to their rivals, with Manchester United having exited the
competition the previous evening. Maddox got in on the act next with
probably the pick of the goals, his brilliant run weaving in and out of a
couple of challenges before planting his finish into the corner of the
net.
The damage had been done but there was more to come as Ugbo bagged his
brace and our fifth with 25 minutes remaining. St Clair and Ugbo advanced
towards goal, with the former unselfishly and intelligently slipping a
pass into the striker, who finished with his usual confidence, composure
and quality for his fourth Youth Cup goal in four starts.
Susceptible to taking their foot off the gas with five goals on the
scoreboard, Morris introduced further attacking firepower in the form of
Martell Taylor-Crossdale and George McEachran, switching to a 4-diamond-2
in the process. Taylor-Crossdale was thwarted by good defending at the
front post after powerful running down the right, while Uwakwe and Maddox
both shot off-target as the Blues continued to pour forward relentlessly.
Grant supplied another great delivery from the left that Taylor-Crossdale
fired narrowly over before Uwakwe, set up by Sterling, drilled wide. On
another evening, with the chances created, the Blues might have hit double
figures, though a repeat of last term's five-goal winning margin in the
third round over Huddersfield gets the Youth Cup campaign up-and-running
nicely.
The action concludes competitive football for the Under-18s for 2016, with
a place in the fourth round assured and the league side four points clear
at the top of the league. Morris's side will face a trip to Oldham
Athletic or Birmingham City in January, with their third round tie taking
place tomorrow evening (Wednesday).
Our development squad have two final fixtures before Christmas, both of
which are free entry at Aldershot. Adi Viveash's side host Dinamo Zagreb
this Friday 16 December and Swansea City on Thursday 22 December in the
Premier League International Cup. Both games will also be screened live on
Chelsea TV.

Youth Cup reaction: Hungry holders
Wed 14 Dec 2016
Our Under-18s booked a place in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup last
night (Tuesday) with a comfortable victory over Cardiff City at Aldershot.
The Blues began another campaign as the team to beat following three
consecutive trophy wins in the competition and, with Jody Morris taking
the reins from Joe Edwards this term, they were uncompromising as they
downed the Bluebirds from south Wales. Leading by a solitary strike at the
break courtesy of Mason Mount, it was a seven-minute salvo yielding four
goals in the second half that secured a 5-0 win for the holders.
After the game, manager Morris praised the patience of his young side.
'We were in total control in the first half but you get those type of
games no matter what level you play, when an opponent sets up like that
and it can be difficult no matter how good your players are on the pitch,'
he told the official Chelsea website.
'It can be frustrating but I made the point at half-time that I didn't
want the boys to start forcing things or getting agitated with each other.
I felt once the second goal went in then the floodgates would open, though
I wasn't expecting four goals in seven minutes!'
Mount's opener was followed by strikes from Tariq Uwakwe, a half-time
introduction, Jacob Maddox and a brace from striker Ike Ugbo. The number
nine has led the line impressively for our development squad this season
and his goals took him into double figures in all competitions.
'We started a bit too slowly,' Ugbo told us afterwards. 'There wasn't
enough atmosphere to our play and we weren't playing the ball forward a
lot but Mason did well to get the first goal and then we came out a bit
more aggressive for the second half.
'Jody told us at half-time not to get bored of doing the simple stuff, to
just keep playing with each other and the goals would come. It's good for
my confidence to come back into the Youth Cup group and score two goals in
the first game.
'There is a little bit of pressure following Tammy Abraham and Dominic
Solanke as the main striker in this team but it's good pressure and it
makes me want to try to achieve what they did and score as many goals as
them in the competition.'
Morris's attacking options continue to be the envy of most in the country.
Martell Taylor-Crossdale, a second-half substitute last night, is the
leading goalscorer in the Under-18 Premier League, while Mount, Maddox,
Ugbo and Dujon Sterling have all netted in Premier League 2 this season.
'If you're a number nine in any team, the quicker you get off the mark,
the better so it's great for Ike but it's also great for Jacob, Mason and
Tariq,' the manager continued. 'They are the type of players who I like to
see involved in the build-up but when it looks like there's a ball coming
into the box I also want to see them in and around it because of the
quality they show in the final third.'
Uwakwe replaced Luke McCormick at the interval and took just 13 minutes to
fire us into a two-goal lead. Morris explained his thought process behind
the switch and praised the impact of his substitute, while reinforcing the
strength in depth the group has once again this year.
'The three midfielders were not as fluid as I would have liked but with
Luke booked early on, for a challenge that I didn't think was anywhere
near a booking, I didn't want to risk anything going wrong in the second
half as far as us going down to 10 men and making it an even tougher night.
'I felt Tariq could come on to make a difference and he ended up taking
the game by the scruff of the neck. He almost controlled the game in the
second half. I thought he was excellent. The way people like Tariq, George
McEachran and Martell Taylor-Crossdale have been playing for me in the
league, I made a point that I wanted to get them on the pitch and give
them some Youth Cup experience because you never know when you're going to
need to rely on that experience later in the competition. It was a decent
performance from us and we scored some really good goals so I'm delighted
for the boys.'
Morris's side will discover their fourth round opponents later this
evening (Wednesday) when Oldham Athletic meet Birmingham City. The winners
of that tie will host the holders in January.
Before then, our development squad have two final fixtures before
Christmas, both of which are free entry at Aldershot. Adi Viveash's side
host Dinamo Zagreb this Friday 16 December and Swansea City on Thursday 22
December in the Premier League International Cup. Both games will also be
screened live on Chelsea TV.
