Arnesen agrees move to HamburgFebruary 20, 2011
Chelsea sporting director Frank Arnesen will join Hamburg at the end of the
season, the Bundesliga club have confirmed.
Arnesen, 54, will be appointed Hamburg's sporting director on a three-year
contract and will be joined in Germany by Chelsea's chief scout Lee Congerton.
Chelsea announced in November that Arnesen would be leaving the club when his
contract expires and Sunday's news marks the end of Hamburg's search for a
sporting director, having recently been turned down by Matthias Sammer.
"Hamburg is a special club with a long tradition and fantastic
infrastructure," Arnesen said. "I am convinced that with the strength we have
and the right decisions we can develop something big."
Arnesen first made his name as a talent spotter at PSV Eindhoven, with the
Dane credited with helping to unearth players such as Ronaldo, Arjen Robben
and Eidur Gudjohnsen.
He joined Tottenham in 2004 but was prised away by Chelsea after only 12
months in North London. Arnesen was asked to increase the flow of academy
graduates into the Blues first team.
"I am delighted that we have found this fantastic solution," Hamburg chairman
Ernst-Otto Rieckhoff said. "Frank Arnesen has not only the aptitude that is
very meaningful to us for our future thanks to his experience as a manager at
top clubs in Europe, but in particular due to his focus on youth development."
Hamburg are currently in seventh place in the Bundesliga.
