Coronavirus: Guam's Asia Cup basketball opener postponed

Guam's opening Asia Cup basketball qualifier against Hong Kong has been
postponed due to the global coronavirus outbreak.

關島對戰香港的亞洲盃資格賽開幕戰由於全球冠狀病毒的爆發而延賽。


The US Territory were due to open their campaign away to Hong Kong this
evening but basketball's world governing body FIBA confirmed yesterday the
game will be now be rescheduled for a later date.

關島原定在今晚出戰香港，但世界籃球機構FIBA昨天確認此賽事將延期進行。

Three other qualifying games featuring the Philippines, Thailand, Japan,
China and Malaysia have also been postponed.

另外三場菲律賓、泰國、日本、中國和馬來西亞間的資格賽同樣也延期了。


Pacific Daily News reported that the Guam Governor Lou Leon Guerrero denied a
request to host the game against Hong Kong in the territory.

The report said Guerrero sent a letter to EJ Calvo, president of Guam
Basketball Confederation, on Monday, stating that while she supported Guam's
team, she must exercise her responsibilities to keep the coronavirus off the
island.

報導表示Guerrero在週一寄了信給關島籃協主席EJ Calvo，表示在支持關島男籃的同時，
她必須履行職責，將冠狀病毒隔離在島外。


"While I am confident that the Department of Health and Social Services is
prepared to handle the threat of coronavirus, I also believe that it is my
duty to affirmatively minimize any risk to our people. I believe that FIBA
was concerned about the prevalence of the coronavirus in Hong Kong and its
people," Leon Guerrero stated in the letter.

“儘管我確信衛生和社會服務部已準備好應對冠狀病毒的威脅，但我也堅信我有義務明確

Leon Guerrero在信中說。


"And while I agree that it acted appropriately to move this game from Hong
Kong, I do not agree that it should have been moved to Guam. I cannot risk
exposure to our people, including our Guam National Basketball Team.
Therefore, I must disallow this competition at this time."

Guam will now open their qualifying campaign at home against New Zealand on
