Checkatrade Trophy report: Exeter 3 Chelsea 2
Tue 18 Oct 2016
Our development squad were beaten on the road at Exeter City this evening
(Tuesday) as a team of teenagers went down to the League Two side in the
Checkatrade Trophy.
The tough task of facing senior opposition became even more difficult as
Ollie Watkins headed the hosts into the lead after just 68 seconds, before
David Wheeler doubled the advantage midway through the first period and
Liam McAlinden added a third five minutes after the restart.
Ike Ugbo bagged a brace late on and struck the post but Adi Viveash's side
were ultimately unable to complete a late comeback.
The young Blues were narrowly beaten in the group opener at Swindon Town
five weeks previously and Viveash made three changes from the Wiltshire
defeat, with Fankaty Dabo, Ruben Sammut and Joseph Colley coming into the
side.
Captain Dabo lined up in defence alongside Colley, Fikayo Tomori and Jay
Dasilva, protecting Bradley Collins in goal. Sammut partnered Trevoh
Chalobah in central midfield, with Dujon Sterling, Mason Mount and Charlie
Wakefield providing the attacking support for lone striker Ugbo. Exeter
made four changes from their weekend League Two victory away at Barnet,
starting with an average age of just over 24 years.
Viveash had warned in the build-up to the tie of the issues faced when
chasing the game for so long at Swindon yet his young players were facing
up to an identical scenario with barely a minute on the clock. McAlinden's
cross floated from left to right into the penalty area and Watkins headed
back across goal to beat the helpless goalkeeper from close range.
Tomori headed off the line moments later after Collins had rushed out to
thwart Reuben Reid, who had subsequently managed to get his shot in on
goal. The Grecians were hassling and harrying their visitors at every
opportunity, while looking to exploit the space in behind. Collins was
forced to rush off his line again before the 15-minute mark and kick clear
having won the foot race with Watkins.
Viveash's side slowly settled and grew more confident. Dasilva failed to
find a teammate with a set-piece delivery that carried too much weight,
before Ethan Ampadu denied Wakefield an equaliser with a crucial
intervention to clear the winger's shot on the line.
With 24 minutes on the clock, the hosts established a key two-goal cushion.
Wheeler was afforded too much time and space on the edge of the box and he
did not pass up the opportunity to strike, crashing a powerful drive into
the far corner.
Collins dived low to clutch McAlinden's low cross from the left as chances
dried up for the remainder of the half. When Mount did see a chance to
strike moments before the interval, his effort flew high and wide of
Christy Pym's upright.
The Blues started the second period with changes to personnel and system.
Kyle Scott replaced Colley as Viveash switched to a 3-4-2-1 shape,
shooting towards the goal behind which a vocal away following in excess of
250 gathered.
However, despite a promising five minutes with Maddox in particular able to
turn on occasions into space, Exeter made it 3-0 as Pierce Sweeney teed up
McAlinden to steer in from a few yards out.
Our young players refused to be cowed and continued to move the ball and
fashion openings. Scott threaded a super pass forward for Maddox to collect
down the inside-right channel but Pym was out impressively to smother at
the midfielder's feet.
Ampadu blocked Dasilva's shot before a terrific rising strike from Ugbo 20
yards out flew past Pym into the top corner to reduce the deficit with 15
minutes to play. It was a goal that gave the visitors a glimmer of hope and
ensured an open final period. Reid headed inches wide of an unguarded goal
before Sterling connected to Dasilva's free-kick but failed to divert it
towards goal.
Ugbo struck the post from a very narrow angle as the clock ticked towards
90 minutes, beating Pym but not the woodwork before Scott stretched
agonisingly but unsuccessfully as he tried to poke in Dabo's drive. Ugbo
did find the net again late in stoppage time, firing confidently into the
bottom corner on the turn.
With barely seconds left on the clock, Dasilva almost snatched a point and
forced a penalty shootout as his curling right-foot shot was clawed away by
Pym.
Despite their efforts and a spirited fightback, Viveash's boys were left
with nothing to take home for their efforts.
Our development squad return to league action next Monday 24 October when
they host Derby County at Aldershot. Before then, our youth team travel to
Tottenham for a London derby in the Under-18 Premier League on Saturday
morning.
