Wang scores extra rest as Nats welcome Reds

Chien-Ming Wang keeps making it rain.
For the second consecutive time, Wang's start was pushed back a day because
of rain. He was scheduled to start Sunday in the Nationals' series finale
against the Phillies, but he will instead take the mound Tuesday as
Washington begins a three-game set against the Reds.
Wang is coming off his best outing of the season when he tossed six scoreless
innings of one-hit ball against the Cubs last week on an extra day of rest
because of a rain postponement.
"[Wang] had his best outing for us with an extra day in Chicago," manager
Davey Johnson said. "When you're coming along like he has, with everything
he's gone through, sometimes an extra day is good."
Johnson has limited Wang's pitch count, but now he believes his starter can
go deep into a ballgame.
"He's at that point now," Johnson said. "He was at that point last time, but
he had a great outing and was at 81 pitches and I had confidence in my
bullpen."
After the Padres snapped the Reds' four-game winning streak Sunday, Mike
Leake will take the hill in hopes of building a new streak. In his last
start, Leake worked into the eighth inning, allowing only two runs on 11 hits
as he picked up his 10th win of the season.
In his second season, the 23-year-old hasn't allowed more than three earned
runs in his last five starts dating back to July 19.
Nationals: Tightness lingers in Lannan's knee
Pitcher John Lannan's extraordinary play in his Saturday start may come with
a price. When Lannan fielded a chopper from Wilson Valdez and flipped it to
home plate, beating a dashing Ryan Howard, he tweaked his left knee.
After the play, Lannan said he had trouble pushing off the mound and said he
still felt stiffness on Sunday.
"It was just an awkward movement," Lannan said.
He will be evaluated later in the week.
Reds: Phillips back on the field
Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips was back in the lineup Sunday in the
series finale between the Reds and the Padres. Phillips missed six of the
last seven starts and four in a row after being plunked in the left elbow by
Rockies pitcher Esmil Rogers during a loss to Colorado on Tuesday.
"Happy isn't the word for it," Phillips said. "This is my life."
Prior to this injury, Phillips had missed two starts with a sprained right
ankle suffered against the Cubs in Chicago.
