Ryan Bertrand determined not to be forever known for Chelsea's Champions
League win ahead of his biggest summer yet
May 10, 2014 10:14 - By John Cross
Ryan Bertrand is facing the biggest summer of his career.
Bertrand is determined not to be forever known as the youngster who made
his European debut for Chelsea when they won the 2012 Champions League
final.
Aston Villa's on-loan left back wants to go from strength to strength, win
more England caps and lay down roots in the Premier League.
Bertrand could have gone to Liverpool last summer, was persuaded to stay
at Chelsea by Jose Mourinho but now wants an honest chat about his career.
“I'll go back to Chelsea in the summer and if they want me to play then
that would be great,” said Bertrand. “Should it be other options, I
suppose the ball is in their court.
“It's something we'll sit down and talk about in the summer. At this
stage in my career I need to be playing. I don't want to be sat on the
bench next season, so that is something we will discuss in the summer.
“For me personally I feel I'm more than ready. I deserve the chance to
play there consistently, having had the experiences that I have done under
numerous managers.
“I've learnt from some of the best players at the highest level. The
likes of Didier, JT, Lamps, Ash directly in my position. I feel it's my
time. I'm 24, I'm looking forward to getting settled for the first time.
“I've had a taste of what it's like to be at the top, to win things. I've
won the Champions League already. I've played for England a couple of
times, in a crucial qualifying game (against Ukraine) as well.
“Playing for your country is the pinnacle. To have that side of success
and know what it takes, that's where I want to be, what I want to get more
of.
“The Champions League final is something I don't want people to forget,
I've played at the highest level, had success at the highest level.
“But, personally, I don't want to rest on my laurels, I've got the taste
for it and it's something I want to actively pursue it. I want to get the
taste for it again.”
Bertrand, who is in the sixth loan spell of his career, nearly stopped his
mum Debbie seeing his finest hour, winning the Champions League after
Chelsea's dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Bayern Munich in 2012.
Londoner Bertrand did not expect to start the game but now wants more.
He is patriotic about playing for England, believes his Chelsea rival
Ashley Cole is still No1 and says he is driven by ambition rather than
money.
Bertrand said: “I had given away my Champions League final tickets, I
told her there was no point in her coming out there, my chances of playing
were none or at best slim but she was not having it.
“She ended up booking the flight anyway without me knowing. She did it
the day before and was saying: 'no, I'm going to come.' She ended up
coming so it must have been a mother's intuition or sixth sense.
“I'd pick Ash (for the World Cup). He's tried and tested. Sometimes I
think we should value and respect our national team more. Realise this is
the pinnacle for our country in football.
“The Champions League is the pinnacle of club football; England more for
the boyhood dream. I remember playing at Wembley, the old Twin Towers, for
Gillingham in a six-a-side game as a kid. I remember lifting a bit of
grass putting it in my sock!"
