Young defender heads south

Academy defender Dynel Simeu has today completed a permanent transfer to
Southampton.

The England Under-19 international joins the South Coast club after seven
years in our youth development programme, returning to the area in which
he grew up following his move to England from Cameroon as a child.


Simeu made 22 appearances last term for Andy Myers's development squad,
having played seven times in the Premier League 2 title triumph of
2019/20. He was a regular at the heart of the defence and captained the
team on numerous occasions.


We thank Dynel for his time at the club and wish him well in the future.

Southampton have agreed to a ￡1.5 million deal to poach one of Chelsea's
best young defenders, Goal can confirm, after having their three-year
contract offer to Dynel Simeu accepted. The Blues have inserted a sizable
sell-on fee into the deal with the Saints and the transfer is set to be
finalised in the coming days.

The 19-year-old center back had been a free agent since the end of the
season after letting his Chelsea contract run down, and he will now
continue his development with Southampton. Like Jon Russell at
Huddersfield, Simeu will initially go into Saints' reserve team, but will
likely have a clearer potential pathway into first-team Premier League
football.

Chelsea will reportedly receive a ￡1.5m transfer fee (agreed in lieu of a
fee set by tribunal, which would've been the case due to Simeu's age),
with a “sizable” sell-on fee.
