The Relationships between Motivational Climate, Passion, and Intrinsic Motivation among Basketball Players: The mediating effect of passion
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between motivational climate, passion, and intrinsic motivation among junior high school basketball players. In addition, the mediating effect of passion between motivational climate and intrinsic motivation was also examined. One hundred and forty-four junior high school basketball players (72 boys and 72 girls) were recruited from 12 different teams who competed in Junior High School League. The participants were asked to complete a questionnaire which assessed their perceptions of motivational climate, passion, and intrinsic motivation. In accord with the previous studies, the results of the correlations between motivational climate and intrinsic motivation indicated that only task-oriented climate but not ego-oriented climate was positively related to intrinsic motivation. With respect to the relationship between motivational climate and passion, the results indicated that only task-oriented climate was positively correlated to both harmonious passion and obsessive passion. In addition, both harmonious passion and obsessive passion were positively related to intrinsic motivation. Regarding the mediating effect of passion between motivational climate and intrinsic motivation, the results of this study indicated that both harmonious passion and obsessive passion had partial mediating effects between task-oriented climate and intrinsic motivation. In other words, task-oriented climate positively predicted both harmonious passion and obsessive passion and then positively predicted intrinsic motivation. In addition, task –oriented motivation can also directly predict intrinsic motivation. The results of this study were discussed and the implications and future directions were also suggested.
