As the NBA’s playoff races wind down, those teams who have long abandoned
postseason hopes have only the future to look forward to. SN’s Sean Deveney
is looking at the state of those teams and how their offseasons will shape
up, one by one.

This is an easy group to get excited about, evidenced by their 21-10 record
since Feb. 6 after a 17-33 start. They gambled by matching a max contract
offer to Gordon Hayward last summer, and he appears primed to become an
All-Star. They have another potential star in the frontcourt in power forward
Derrick Favors, who is only 23 but has begun to expand his offensive game,
adding shooting to match his athleticism. He is under contract for three more
years at $35 million. They’ve developed a dominant defensive big man in
center Rudy Gobert, who has averaged 11.2 points, 13.8 rebounds and 2.5
blocks a game since the All-Star break.

The problem remains the backcourt, where the young potential lacks solid
answers. Dante Exum, a 19-year-old Australian rookie, clearly has talent but
is every bit as raw as scouts feared he would be. But he still surpassed
second-year man Trey Burke as the starter at point guard — Burke is better
now, but might not prove to be a starter in the NBA, while Exum has the
higher ceiling. Sixth man combo guard Alec Burks has not played since
December shoulder surgery, but he is locked in with a four-year, $42 million
contract extension kicking in next year. The recently play of rookie shooting
guard Rodney Hood (11.9 points, 41.9 percent shooting from the 3-point line
since the All-Star break) has shown he will have a place in the team’s
rotation going forward. It’s a young group, but it is already producing.

If the Jazz didn't seem to get much for former No. 3 overall pick Enes
Kanter, shipped to the Thunder at the trade deadline for future first- and
second-round picks and the rights to Tibor Pleiss, it’s because everyone
knew Utah was in an untenable situation with Kanter. Talks about an extension
last offseason never got close to serious, and there was long-simmering
tension between Kanter and the organization. Losing Kanter might have been
addition by subtraction, then. “It may not look like a good deal,” one
front-office executive said, “but it was obvious to all of us they had to
get rid of him. They just wanted a pick in return.”

Draft outlook選秀展望

The Jazz will have their own pick this year, and the approach they take will
be interesting. They have two future picks on the books, including the
Warriors’ pick in 2017 and the Thunder’s future first-rounder (which
probably will come in 2018). It is unlikely that Utah, with a pick in the
12-13 range, will find an instant answer to its backcourt issue in a draft
short on guards and shooters. That means the Jazz could either draft the best
available to add depth or look to package their pick and perhaps a future
pick for an established player.

The Jazz have given long-term deals to Hayward, Favors and Burks, which means
they won’t have much flexibility this summer. They’ve been patient with
their development and rebuilding process, and it would be hard to imagine
them making any sudden moves now. The most gaping hole is experience — no
one on the roster has been in the league more than five years. Bringing in a
couple of low-cost veterans, probably a point guard and a big man, would be
enough to fill that gap.
