Ukrainian tennis player Kristina Antoniychuk suspended 14 months for doping

LONDON — Ukrainian teenage tennis player Kristina Antoniychuk has been
suspended for 14 months for doping.

The International Tennis Federation says the 19-year-old Antoniychuk tested
positive for banned diuretic furosemide on Feb. 22 at the Mexican Open.

Antoniychuk said the drug got into her system through a prescription, and the
ITF says it accepted her explanation.

The ITF says, however, that "it is a player's strict personal duty to ensure
that no prohibited substance enters his-her body" and that she lacked the
necessary therapeutic exemption.

Antoniychuk's ban will end on April 21, 2011. Her results since the date of
the positive test will be disqualified.
