The challenger
Mariners
The Mariners regrouped as if preparing for a wedding: Something old (Jamie
Moyer), something new (Jarrod Washburn), something borrowed (Kenji Johjima),
something blue (Carl Everett). Seattle will divorce itself from the AL West
cellar, and could find Mariners bliss if the pitching holds up and the
offense catches up.
Projected regular-season finish: Second place
Biggest Spring Training challenge: The education of Johjima; breaking the
last barrier as the first catcher from Japan is one thing, the language
barrier may be something else. Making it a healing spring; some people went
home pretty flustered last October.
Best position battles: Rafael Soriano could be a wild card at the back end of
the rotation, if either Joel Pineiro or Gil Meche doesn't assert himself.
Since Johjima is such a mystery, backup catcher could be a critical spot and
Rene Rivera and Corky Miller will battle it out.
Wild card: Moyer and Washburn should be a potent left-left punch around King
Hernandez, especially at Safeco. Whether the lineup can find the consistency
to do its part really comes down to one person: Adrian Beltre. With Ichiro
Suzuki and Richie Sexson in front of him, Beltre can build big innings. A big
concern is that Beltre's first season in Seattle (.255, 19, 87) wasn't a
slump off his phenomenal 2004 (.334, 48, 121) but a return to his normal
level. His averages for his first six pre-2004 seasons: .262-16-65.
