Manchester City test Frank Lampard's resolve by offering him six-month
switch before NYC move
Jun 01, 2014 22:30 - By Darren Lewis
Manchester City will try to persuade New York City-bound Frank Lampard to
break his promise never to play for another Premier League club.
As revealed on Saturday night by Mirror Football , the 35-year-old Chelsea
midfielder - England's World Cup vice-captain - HAS agreed a lucrative
deal to join the title winners' US franchise.
Despite suggestions that only informal talks have been held with New York
FC, MirrorFootball understands the MLS club - and the Premier League
champions - now regard Lampard's signing as a formality.
The new club's campaign, however, does not kick off until March 2015 and
Lampard - set to be released by Chelsea this month - will need to play in
the meantime.
Lampard, who turns 36 this month, claimed three weeks ago that he would
never line up against Chelsea for another top flight club.
City, however, are hoping he will stage a U-turn and improve their English
quota with Micah Richards, Jack Rodwell, Gareth Barry, Scott Sinclair and
Joleon Lescott leaving.
Lampard, who flew out with England's World Cup squad to Miami on Sunday,
will be joined by Atletico Madrid striker David Villa.
The 32-year-old is set to be confirmed as the New York FC's other massive
capture today.
The Spain marksman was with Lampard at City's Carrington complex on
Saturday - as revealed by MirrorFootball - to undergo the final stages of
his £5m transfer.
Villa revealed on Saturday night that he would be leaving the shock La
Liga winners after one season to join an “irresistible project”.
